Hi,

Is there an ``rst2pdf`` tool being planned (or worked on) for docutils?

To generate a pdf, is it currently standard to have to go to pdf via
LaTeX? As in::

    $ rst2latex foo.txt foo.ltx
    $ pdflatex foo.ltx

I really hope the answer is "yes". I suspect it's "no".

Except for the convention being to name the file with a ".tex" suffix,
yes.

You can also try rst2odt, then open the generated document in
OpenOffice oowriter and export to PDF.  It's alpha-ware, and if you
try it, please give me your opinion, evaluation, and suggestions.
I'm the implementor.  You can find rst2odt in the sandbox under
OpenDocument.

I have quite good experiences with `py.rest --topdf`:

* py.rest from the Codespeak `py Lib scripts`_ converts
  reStructuredText files to HTML and PDF (cleaning up the intermediate
  latex files).  Similar to ``buildhtml.py``, it looks recursively for
  .txt files in the given PATHS.
  
  Debian GNU/Linux users find it in the package "python-codespeak-lib".

  Unfortunately, it does not support the command line options for
  fine-tuning the output known from `rst2latex`.
  
An rst2pdf is on my TODO list, but not timetable set yet.

Wow. How did I never find out about this?

Just tried it; works as advertised on the box. This solves an issue
I've had for years.
