Alibaba Cloud DNS:Domain management

Last Updated:May 12, 2025

This topic describes authoritative domain management, including operations such as adding domain names, removing domain names, recovering domain names, and managing domain name groups.

Add a domain name

Warning

Alibaba Cloud DNS public authoritative resolution currently has an invalid domain name resolution data cleanup mechanism. Invalid domain name resolution data will be deleted after 30 days.

Rules for determining invalid domain names:

  • Non-Alibaba Cloud registered domain names that use the free version of DNS and have not modified the DNS servers at the domain name registrar to the DNS server addresses assigned by Alibaba Cloud DNS.

  • Non-Alibaba Cloud registered domain names with independently hosted subdomains, and using the free version of DNS, while not configuring NS records on the DNS of their parent domain to point to the DNS server addresses assigned by Cloud DNS.

Domain names registered with Alibaba Cloud and their independently hosted subdomains are not considered invalid domains and will not be cleaned up, regardless of whether they use the free version of DNS.

  • Alibaba Cloud registered domain names do not need to be added. After domain registration is complete, you can directly set DNS records in the Alibaba Cloud DNS console.

  • Non-Alibaba Cloud registered domain names or subdomains that need to use Alibaba Cloud DNS must be added to the Alibaba Cloud DNS console through the add domain name feature before domain name resolution services can be enabled.

Note

Add Domain Name primarily describes how to add non-Alibaba Cloud registered primary domain names to the Alibaba Cloud DNS console. To add subdomains, refer to the setup method

Procedure

Non-Alibaba Cloud registered domain names

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud DNS console.

  2. On the Authoritative DNS Resolution page, under the Authoritative Domain Names tab, click the Add Domain Name button.

  3. In the Add Domain Name dialog box, enter the primary domain name, then select the instance you want to attach. If there are no paid instances available to attach, click the Purchase Package Instance button to open the purchase page. After completing the purchase, click the Bind Instance dropdown again, select the new instance, and click the OK button.

    Note

For differences between instance versions, see Version comparison. Paid versions offer 100% monthly availability SLA with higher query speeds and security guarantees. We recommend using paid versions for production environments.

  4. After adding the domain name, you can view it under the Authoritative Domain Names tab, indicating that the domain name has been successfully added.

    Note

After successfully adding the domain name, if the DNS server address status is not normal, refer to View DNS server status and troubleshoot abnormal status.

Recover a domain name

Domain name recovery refers to when a non-Alibaba Cloud registered domain name is added through the Alibaba Cloud DNS console, and a prompt appears indicating that the domain name has already been added by another account when clicking Add Domain Name. If you are the domain name registrant, you can use the Domain Name Recovery feature to recover this domain name to the account you are currently operating.

Warning

When a domain name is recovered to a new account, all previous DNS records will be deleted.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud DNS console. On the Authoritative DNS Resolution page, under the Authoritative Domain Names tab, click the Add Domain Name button.

  2. The Add Domain Name dialog box will indicate that the domain name has been added by another account. Click Recover Domain Name.

  3. A domain registrant identity verification prompt will appear. Copy the TXT record value and do not close this dialog box.

  4. Go to the current DNS service provider for this domain name and add the host record and record value generated in step "4" to create a TXT record.

  5. After adding the TXT record at the current DNS service provider, return to the domain registrant identity verification dialog box in Alibaba Cloud DNS and click the Confirm button. Alibaba Cloud DNS will automatically scan for the added TXT record. If the scan confirms that the TXT record has been properly added, you will receive an email notification that "Domain name recovery successful," and the domain name will be added to the account that initiated the recovery request.

Remove a domain name

In the Alibaba Cloud DNS console, domain name removal applies only to non-Alibaba Cloud registered domain names. When a domain name is removed, all its DNS records will also be deleted (Alibaba Cloud registered domain names cannot be removed).

Procedure

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud DNS console.

  2. On the Authoritative DNS Resolution page, under the Authoritative Domain Names tab, click the Actions column for the target domain name, click the More button, and then click Delete. A confirmation dialog box will appear. Click Confirm to remove the domain name.

    Warning

Removing a domain name will also delete all its DNS records. Please confirm before proceeding.

Recover DNS records

DNS record recovery applies to Alibaba Cloud registered domain names. If the DNS records of a domain name have been transferred to another Alibaba Cloud account, you can recover the DNS records and their management rights to the current account through the Add Domain Name feature. For example, if a domain name is in Account A, and its DNS records have been transferred to Account B through the batch transfer of domain name DNS records to another account feature, you can recover the DNS records from Account B back to Account A using the Add Domain Name feature in Account A.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud DNS console.

  2. On the Authoritative DNS Resolution page, under the Authoritative Domain Names tab, click Add Domain Name, and enter the target domain name in the Add Domain Name dialog box.

  3. A reminder will appear in the dialog box: This Domain Name Has Been Transferred To Another Account For Management. Do You Want To Recover The Domain Name Resolution Management Rights To The Current Account. If you need to recover the domain name and its DNS records, check Recover Domain Name And DNS Records. Additionally, the system will identify the DNS instance information bound to your domain name in Account B. If it's a paid version, you should purchase the same version instance in Account A. As shown in the figure below, check Bind Same Version Instance To Ensure Smooth Migration, and the system will automatically bind the instance to avoid service interruption.

    image.png

    Warning
    1. If the domain name in Account B is already bound to a paid instance, please purchase the same version instance in Account A. Otherwise, when recovering DNS records, the domain name will be bound to a free instance by default, which may cause DNS records that were only supported by the paid instance to be suspended, leading to service interruption.

    2. If you don't want to bind a paid instance after recovering DNS records, you should check the DNS records in Account B before proceeding. For specific check items, refer to DNS record check. You also need to disable the Update Lock and DNSSEC features.

    3. If the domain name in Account B is using a free DNS instance, you can directly perform the DNS record recovery operation. The DNS records will not be affected and can be smoothly transferred.

  4. After selecting the instance to bind, click Confirm to recover the DNS records to the current account.

Domain name group management

Domain name group management refers to categorizing and managing domain names in the Alibaba Cloud DNS console through groups. This includes creating groups, modifying groups, deleting groups, and changing groups.

Note
  • "All Domain Names" is a system group that counts all domain names under domain resolution. System group names cannot be modified or deleted.

  • Domain names have uniqueness in group management and cannot exist in multiple groups simultaneously.

  • After deleting a group, the domain names in that group will be removed from the group. You can manage these domain names through the All Domain Names group.

  • The maximum limit for creating groups is 100.

  • Group names are limited to 20 characters.

  • There is no limit to the number of domain names that can be added to a group.

  • Group management operations do not support LogSearch.

Create a group

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud DNS console.

  2. On the Authoritative DNS Resolution page, under the Authoritative Domain Names tab, click the All Domain Names dropdown box, and click image.

    image

  2. Click the delete icon next to the group name to delete the group. The domain names in that group will be removed from the group, and you can manage them through the All Domain Names group.

Change groups

Changing groups refers to adding domain names to a group or moving domain names from Group A to Group B.

  1. On the Authoritative DNS Resolution page, under the Authoritative Domain Names tab, select the domain names you want to operate on, and click Change Group.

  2. Select the group to which you want to add the domain names, and click Confirm.

  3. After successfully moving the domain names to the group, you can click the group name to view them.
