Hanselminutes #256: JavaScript & jQuery: Moving beyond Alert()

Dave Ward ( @encosia ) and I were honored to be guests on Hanselminutes #256: JavaScript & jQuery: Moving beyond Alert() while we were at the MVP Summit in Redmond, WA.

Listen to Podcast

Our conversations revolved around trying to encourage developers to take their JavaScript knowledge to the next level.

Many developers view JavaScript as a necessary evil and possibly a toy language. Part of this tarnished view of JavaScript may have stemmed from the olden days when you had to manually navigate through the various DOM inconsistencies yourself. Thankfully today modern JavaScript libraries (such as jQuery, Dojo, MooTools, YUI, etc) have abstracted away many of those horrible cross-browser inconsistencies in the DOM.

Many developers don't take the necessary effort to learn JavaScript appropriately. What typically happens is that a developer will try to code JavaScript in the same way they would C#, Java, etc... In many cases, you can be successful with this approach, however, the more JavaScript you write you will inevitably find yourself uncovering strange bugs.

Lint Tools
These are some tools that can help you identify some common problems in your JavaScript

Script Loaders
A way to load your scripts asynchronously so that your pages can load faster

HTML5 Libraries
Detects features of your browser so that you can use it or pollyfill with JavaScript

Books
These are some good books to introduce you to JavaScript, show you what you what parts are good, and also good patterns that you should consider.

Articles
These articles are targeted for C# developers that want to understand JavaScript better.d

Videos
These are some great videos that I have learned a lot from. If you have time I strongly encourage you sit back and enjoy.

Stepping Down from The Official jQuery Podcast

ps.nrdkgcvf.170x170-75 In case you haven’t heard from the end of the Rey Bomb #2 Episode of The Official jQuery Podcast, I announced that after 21 episodes I am stepping down as my role of co-host.

Around the time I first joined the podcast I also started to become involved with some intense writing projects (as will become apparent in the near future), although I can’t say much about it right now :)

As a result, I haven’t had much margin in my life. I’ve been running on empty for quite some time and other more important things in my life have gotten the shaft! Unfortunately, one of those was my family and I intend to change that.

I don’t plan to fall off the face of the earth. I plan to refocus on blogging and tweeting. I would like to do some more speaking, but probably not for the rest of the year as baby #3 is coming in August.

I am honored to have been asked to join The Official jQuery Podcast and during my involvement I got to meet many great people that I hadn’t previously known. I am glad to have formed these relationships, and look forward to further investing in them.

I hope the future of The Official jQuery Podcast is bright and I encourage you to either start or continue to listen.

New Official jQuery Podcast Announced

jquerypodcast In case you  hadn’t heard yet, the Official jQuery Podcast (@jQueryPodcast) has officially been announced.

It was first announced at the StackOverflow DevDays event in Toronto, ON, Canada on Friday Oct 23rd, 2009 and then it was tweeted yesterday by the @jQueryPodcast account and retweeted by myself and others.

Ralph Whitbeck (@redwolves), member of the jQuery Evangelism Team, and I (@elijahmanor) will be hosting a weekly jQuery podcast starting in mid-November.

Our first guest will be non-other than Mr. jQuery himself, John Resig (@jeresig).

The format of the show will loosely be interviewing a jQuery related guest and then jumping into a review of jQuery happenings from the previous week.

We already have a great line-up of guests scheduled. I hope you are as excited as I am about this new opportunity.

So, keep your eyes out for the 1st podcast coming to you mid-November ;)

You can follow @jQueryPodcast for up-to-date news and information.

My First Podcast Interview

A good friend of mine, Tanton Gibbs (@tgibbs), from Microsoft has started a new Podcast series called New Tech Cast.

In these podcasts, I'm going to be interviewing up and comers in the software development world. These industrious developers will have their fingers on the pulse of today's tech and should provide great insight into the things to come.

I was flattered to be chosen for his first Podcast interview. In the podcast we discussed my history, various technologies that I use (ASP.NET MVC, jQuery, etc...), and a variety of other things.

You can download and listen to the podcast on his new website.
