Physical Build and Athleticism
A few physical attributes particularly suit Phelps to swimming. Among them are his long, thin torso, which offers him low drag in the water. Also to his advantage in the pool are his arms, which span 6 feet 7 inches (201 cm). This is highly disproportionate to his height of 6 feet 4 inches (193 cm). His arms act as long, propulsive paddles.
His relatively short legs lower drag, and perhaps add the speed enhancement of a hydrofoil; his size-14 feet provide the effect of flippers; and his hyper-mobile ankles can extend beyond the pointe of a ballet dancer, enabling him to whip his feet as if they were fins for maximum thrust through the water.
Phelps has size 14 feet, but in addition to large feet, he also has double-jointed ankles.
His physique notwithstanding, endurance may be Michael’s single greatest asset. He’s able to hold his stroke under pressure and when fatigue begins to creep in. From a mind over matter standpoint, Michael is also off the charts. His ability to relax, focus and block out the pain all at once is unique in his sport. He never seems nervous before a race, yet his intensity on the starting block is unmatched.
All of this leads to the same conclusions, which have been drawn by many: Michael Phelps has the perfect build and athleticism for a swimmer.
Early Life
Michael Fred Phelps was born and raised in the Rodgers Forge neighborhood of Towson, Maryland, which is a northwest suburb of Baltimore City. Michael was the youngest of three extremely gifted children. His parents already had two daughters, Hilary and Whitney. His mother, Deborah Sue (Debbie), is a middle school principal. His father, Michael Fred Phelps, was a football player in high school and almost made the team for the Washington Redskins in his youth. His ancestry includes English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and German. The family lived in Maryland, just outside of Baltimore. Fred was a state trooper and Debbie was a middle-school teacher who was twice named Maryland’s Teacher of the Year.
Michael Phelps began swimming at the age of seven. He did this in large part because of the influence of his sisters and also partly to provide an outlet for his tremendous energy. Much of Phelps’ energy comes from his genetics. When Phelps was in the sixth grade, he was diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Michael worked with Debbie to overcome the condition. This would have a profound effect on his life, both for good and
