Foreword
By Rev. Paul A. Sorber
Thomas, a disciple of Christ, was not only a doubter, he also had a poor sense of direction. In John 14:1-6, Christ is teaching His disciples of heaven and the mansion that will be prepared for us. In that context, the direction-less
Thomas asks Christ, Lord, we don’t know where you’re going, and how can we know the way?
Christ’s response is that profound statement: I am the way, the truth, and the Life: no man cometh to the Father but by me.
(John 14:6)
Over the past 18 years of ministry, I have come to know many, direction-less
disciples. People who want to go where Jesus went but don’t know how to get there. I am convinced that the reason for this lack of direction is a result of lack of reading the road map God has provided. Yes, God’s Word is the solution to living life as a direction-less disciple.
My greatest challenge in ministry has not been getting people to show up for services or even to sign up for ministries. My challenge has been in getting people to swallow up
God’s Word and let God direct their paths. It’s the Promise of Proverbs 3:5-6 as well as Psalm 119:11 and 119:105.
I am grateful to Phyllis Dolislager for providing a tool for the disciples of Christ to use as they seek God’s Word for direction and God’s face, through prayer, for comfort. I believe that the practical help contained in this book will guide all who read it to improve their spiritual diet as they spend more time feasting at the feet of our Savior.
May God use this book to help us all spend more time in His Book.
Rev. Paul A. Sorber, Senior Pastor
West Pines Baptist Church
Lake Worth, Florida
Introduction
The various steps that are presented in this book for use in one’s devotions didn’t just come to me one day. They’ve evolved over thirty plus years. They’ve come from friends who not only encouraged me to read my Bible each day, but also to highlight the verses that God used to speak to me. Another friend shared ways to organize her life using a planner. This included using specific prayer lists for specific days.
From other friends came the concept of praying whenever and wherever. (Yes, praying over the telephone with a friend in another state is prayer that God hears.) And music, since God uses the words of hymns and praise songs to minister to us, why not use them as a part of our God-time? Some of the ideas about meditating and journaling came as a result of a heart attack
which ended up being a STRESS attack.
This book presents ideas that I have found helpful. They’re presented in an honest, forthright way for you to peruse, check out, or speed read through. This is not meant as the-best-idea-for-everyone-to-read-and-follow-completely book. Through it all, continuously ask God to show you what to claim for you and your God-time.
Through the up’s and down’s of life, we learn to seek God’s face, to beg Him to use us. April 2001, my friend, Terry, came to my home to find out how to have God use her in different, exciting ways.
I showed her what I did for my devotions. I prayed for God to direct my words that day, and now I’m praying that prayer again for you. Are you ready?
