About this ebook
Mood swings and the tantrums ensuing as a result, have been a topic of discussion since time immemorial but no-one actually understood what caused them until the term 'Bipolar Disorder' was coined. Believed to have risen from a single or a combination of factors, this is a medical condition which is characterized by extreme fluctuation in the mood of the person.
A patient of bipolar depression might feel truly elated one moment and is liable to sink into depression the very next instant, the former referred to as mania and the latter as depression. On combining the two terms, the resultant is the phrase 'manic depression' and it is the best way with which to describe bipolar disorder. While genetics play a seminal role in transference of this condition from one generation to the next, environmental and neurological factors have been known to contribute as well. Owing to these mixed reasons, this illness has earned for itself the name neurobiological disorder of the brain.

Getting To Know Bipolar Disorder
Once upon a time people suffering from bipolar disorder were termed as being moody or insane. The terminology changed to manic depression and in modern medicine it is referred to as bipolar disorder. Around 1% of the population is found to be suffering from bipolar depression which manifests itself in two phases namely depression and mania. It is known to be free from gender bias, meaning it affects both men and women equally.
Mania is again of two categories. One is hypomania and people with hypomania have a high amount of energy and show high levels of productivity. These people go on to become great salesmen or powerful businessmen when channeled appropriately. However a person may not retain this state forever and go on to developing the full blown form of mania which is the other form.
A person of full blown mania undergoes a lot of suffering. These people try to indulge in certain things with no real success, but they remain completely oblivious to the fact. They may act without thinking out the cost that he or she might have to pay for those actions. For example they may write out checks without having money on the bank, money may be spent extravagantly or highly valued belongings may be given away as charity only to be regretted later.
Mania can lead to sexual exploits which may result in pregnancy, diseases or problems in relationships. An extreme case may be that of psychosis where a person can become delusional and also start hallucinating. Such people forget reality and therefore are vulnerable to the dangers in their surroundings as they cannot protect themselves.
Subsequent to the manic phase moves is depression and under its influence the person goes to bed for days seeking seclusion. Energy levels and appetite are at an all-time low and sleeping disorders are also apparent. The person may be suicidal and may threaten suicide. These threats have to be taken seriously because more often than not persons contemplate and finally end up actually putting them into action.
Adults and often teenagers suffering from bipolar disorder abuse drug and alcohol. As they say, substance abuse helps them cope up
