Decorative Alphabets Charted Designs - Barbara Christopher
INTRODUCTION
Incorporating monograms, names or other words into needlework designs has a long history. Letters suitable for embroidery were a very popular feature of early needlework pattern books and women’s magazines, and they are in just as much demand today.
Here we offer a selection of charted alphabets to suit every taste, from springtime flowers to Christmas elves to dinosaurs. The alphabets can be used to create a variety of one-of-a-kind accessories and gifts. Embellish a pincushion or scrapbook with an initial or monogram, add a special touch to a baby’s bib or a child’s pinafore, or personalize table or bed linens. You can embroider your name on a tote bag or a Christmas stocking or try combining the letters to form mottoes or other sayings to make unique pictures or pillows. The possibilities are almost endless.
These designs were originally created for counted cross-stitch, but they are easily translated into other needlework techniques. Keep in mind that the finished piece will not be the same size as the charted design unless you are working on fabric or canvas with the same number of threads
