I was inspired to release an updated version of the "Essential Guide to Hip-Hop Marketing and Publicity with an emphasis on publicity, note the name change to the
Essential Guide to Hip-Hop Publicity" after recalling an interview I did with former Creative Loafing Music Editor, Rodney Carmichael in 2011 when he stated that he felt that sometimes publicists can get in the way and that he liked to feel like he was discovering new music and talent. Additionally, I recently asked former XXL Music Editor and current Freelance Hip-Hop Journalist Eric Diep his thoughts on having a publicist reach out to him versus an artist directly and he stated that "To be honest, I'm more of a personal relationship type of person when it comes to people putting me on to new music. If a publicist is spamming me with emails that have subject lines like YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS NOW-type of things, I'm hitting the delete button. You can tell when publicists are genuinely interested about the artists they are representing and it shows in their pitch emails. That makes me press play and look into them more.
As far as hip-hop artists, I'm old school. Just introduce yourself, hand me your tape, and keep it moving. No need to link,
build,
or pick my brain.
