About this ebook

Our daughter Grace is a special needs child, and her life is full of challenges. Because of her illness, her intellectual development was hindered, and there is a certain amount of stubbornness as well. Yet the Lord blesses her, using her stubbornness as a positive trait. She has a warrior spirit, never giving up and always facing her illness fearlessly. Grace was on an extremely restricted diet, but she seldom complained or whined for the food that she could not take. She never complained about doing blood work, because she wanted to be a brave example to the other children around.

I admire Grace because she made up her own story, The Return of Frollo and Sarouscha continuance of the Hunchback of Notre Dame story ten years later. It is my good intention to publish Graces story, not just to encourage her but to share with you our testimony and how Grace touched our lives. I want people to see that behind the special needs, these kids are capable of making a difference in their own lives and others. There are many trials and challenges in life, but only God knows and He is in total control.

    Prologue

    CATHY TANG

GRACE TANG, OUR DAUGHTER, God’s special child, with Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency, had Liver transplant in 2005. God has entrusted us with this Special Child to our family so that we can nurture her and learn with her as she grows up. We brought our two daughters to church since they were little. At bedtime, we always have devotion and story time together; otherwise they will not be able to fall asleep. The past twenty years, we have gone through a lot and faced lots of challenge and shed many tears. But looking back, we deeply believe and realise God has never forsaken us. He was, is and will be with us always as promised. Every precious moment of our lives together with Grace, God walked with us. He kept us and blessed us through thick and thin. He sent all different families, friends and professionals like angels to be with us in moments of need and despair. There have been many different families and friends who walked the difficult path with us, praying with and for us, comforting us and helping us. We learned to accept the facts with love and grace. We learn to love Grace as she is and to embrace the harsh facts no matter what. We truly understand the meaning of the scripture, we live by faith, not by sight…..

Romans 8:28. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

2003, Grace graduated from Richmond Christian Elementary School. During her time in Richmond Christian School, she spent most of her time in the learning center with a teacher aid named Mrs. VanderBos. Not only did Grace receive academic educations from the school, the seeds of bible knowledge and faith were also planted because of Mrs. VanderBos. At lunch time, Grace needed to take her special formula at school. The special formula was not something that’s appetizing and easy to drink. In those 15 minutes to consume the formula drink, in order to distract Grace from the odor and unpleasantness of the drink, Mrs. VanderBos often read bible stories and classic books to her. Over the years, Mrs. VanderBos read such classics like the entire collection from the Chronicle of Narnia (7 books in total) by C.S. Lewis, Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and so on. Through these wonderful reading times together, the great literatures and the love of Mrs. VanderBos sparked the imagination of Grace and also established the strong foundation for her love of books. That’s why she loves history books, classics, biographies and bible stories. Whenever Grace missed school because of sickness or was hospitalised, her teachers would encourage her classmates and school friends to make cards or to write to her, to encourage her and to show their love to her so that she did not feel that she was alone. It was through these kindness and loving care that Grace experienced and received, she learned the love of God in real life. She saw Christ through these loving teachers and friends. Until now, Grace still remembers fondly of those Elementary school days.

2009, Grace graduated the high school from Mediated Learning Academy in Coquitlam. During her high school years at the Academy, she continued to grow and learn to be more confident and independent. She also established a good circle of friends and teachers from high school. Grace is now taking non-credit courses at UBC through the programme supported by the Steps Forward organization. Through this wonderful opportunity, she is able to experience to be an independent college student.

Because of her illness since she was little, she was loved and looked after with tenderness by her families, friends and teachers alike. Therefore she also learned to be kind and care to others just like she was being treated by all the wonderful people around her.

From the below example from the Q and A of her Elementary school, you can have a glimpse of her little world and dive into her thoughts.

Q: How should we treat those who are weak and helpless? Why?

A: we should treat them with love and respect. God tells us.

Grace worked really hard on a story book of her own. Through her limitless imagination, hard work, plus the help of her friends and art therapy, she managed to organize her thoughts, and put her verbalized story into words. I never thought this day would come that she could write, complete and publish her own story book. Look around you, how many God’s Special Child are there in the society? How many these Special Children need your helping hands and loving hearts and kindness to help them to step out their first steps, to accomplish the dreams they might have for themselves. At the beginning of helping these children, you might start with the thoughts and act as helpers, but soon you will realize
