Chapter 1 – The Ketogenic Diet: An Overview
The Ketogenic diet, regarded by its advocates as one of the most profound health boosting lifestyle changes for effortless weight loss, has been used for a number of different purposes since it was first discovered. The diet has become popular among Western society, for its ability to give dramatic results, not only in regards to weight loss but other lifestyle factors as well.
Ketogenic (keto) Diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that includes moderate protein. The diet plan requires users to drastically reduce their daily carb intake and replace it with fat, putting the body in a metabolic state that's known as ketosis. The Ketogenic Diet, otherwise known as Keto Diet
, is a way of eating which emphasizes a very low carbohydrate intake and high fat intake, with a low to moderate protein intake. The ideal daily dietary ratio is made up of 5% carbohydrates, 15% protein and 80% fat. Foods that are allowed are meat, fish, poultry, shellfish, nuts, cheese, and seeds. Most vegetables are also allowed while fruits are reduced because of their high sugar content.
The aim of the diet that eliminates carbohydrates almost completely is to induce a metabolic state within the body known as ketosis. It is in the state where the dramatic body composition changes occur.
Surprisingly this popular weight loss diet originated way back in 1921. It was at this time that the keto diet was first used as a treatment for epilepsy. Research at the time indicated that when patients diagnosed with severe epilepsy dramatically limited their carbohydrate intake and better controlled their blood sugar level, the number of seizures they experienced reduced. In some cases, these seizures stopped completely. Since then, the diet has recently been adopted as a weight loss diet. The diet has become popular amongst celebrities, athletes and a variety of men and women with the aim of achieving quick results. The idea behind this comes from the body's ability to switch to using stored fat as an energy source, thus burning and reducing the amount of fat in the body.
The Keto Diet has been adopted be people all around the world, including well known celebrities who have shown proof of the potential results. The diet is similar to the Atkins Diet and other low carb alternatives but unlike many of these popular diets, the Keto Diet does not work in phases. This makes it an easier alternative as once you a breakdown of what you can and can't eat, the diet itself is relatively straight forward and easy to implement.
The Ketogenic Diet, being a low-carb diet system, restricts carbohydrate consumption to less than 20 percent of the daily caloric intake. Because of the low carbohydrate amount in this diet program, it can also be used to prevent or treat chronic medical problems like cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.
Ketogenic Diet experts advocate argue that this diet, like the Paleolithic diet, is closer to the diet of humans 15 thousand years ago, before the dawn of agriculture. They say that humans are adapted genetically to diets that are low in carbohydrates because food rich in it were scarce during those ancient times.
There are archeological evidences supporting this theory and proves that humans survived and subsisted by gathering and hunting. We have slowly evolved from the vegetarian diets of the great apes to one with a higher level of meat eating. Relatives of the homo sapiens, which is our species, like the Neanderthals seem to be exclusively carnivorous.
