Rain beat against the windows, thunder crashed, and lightning struck, illuminating the hallway. Meredith Blackburn marched through the old mansion, her steps echoing off of towering faceless statues covered in dust covers. If she wasn’t so determined to find her lover, she might be spooked by the haunted house vibe surrounding her on the stormy Halloween evening.

Halfway around the world from the comfort of her own apartment in Atlanta, Meredith felt out of her depth walking through a Tudor era mansion in the south of England. Still, somewhere in the maze of dark stained oak Malcolm Blackwood was hiding. Her lover had been missing for two days on some tracking job, but tonight he had to come home.

A grand ball celebrating Samhain and the thinning of the veil was already starting to get underway back in the States, and Meredith wasn’t planning on attending alone. The little light orb floating in front of her lit up the hallway, saving her from stumbling through the old house, but it did nothing to help her track down Malcolm. She knew he was in the house somewhere and had been for at least a night or two.

That's why Meredith had risked running into some long dead Blackwood ghost. Determined to find him, she had contacted Malcolm’s father, Calvin Blackwood, to get permission to enter into the old mansion. As family property, it was warded against any and all intruders not given permission to be there. For a Blackburn it was like walking straight onto enemy ground. The feud between the families was winding down, but there were times it still sizzled with restrained distaste.

At the end of a long narrow hall, Meredith spotted a thin strip of light shining from under a door. She chuckled quietly. Leave it to Malcolm to take up in the servants’ quarters. Most of the old mansions had remodeled the crowded rooms into something else, but judging by the state of the Blackwood house, they had left the place be for the most part.

Remembering that Malcolm was working, Meredith stepped up to the door slowly and knocked once before reaching down for the handle. She was surprised when the door swung open before she could wrap her fingers around the silver knob.

Standing on the other side of the door, Malcolm’s eyes went wide and he froze. Meredith, how did you get in here? He almost looked like he'd seen a ghost floating around, but Meredith knew he was just shocked that she’d found him.

Only Malcolm would honestly believe he could hide from her on this night of all nights. After nearly a year together, Meredith had learned a lot of his hideaways, and the ones she wasn’t sure of were mostly properties owned by his family. Grabbing the light orb and pulling her magic back into her hands, she lifted her eyebrow at him and sighed. I talked to your father.

Meredith felt a flare of guilt when she saw Malcolm deflate. His surprise bled out and his head dropped. Stepping back, he lifted his arm, inviting her into the small room. Of course you did. I never thought the heads of the family would ever get along so well.

Stepping passed him, Meredith gave the room a sweeping look and nodded. Well, Calvin and I happen to agree on this matter. She was careful not to look too closely at the multiple tracking portals opened around the room. Malcolm had been on this job for a few weeks now, but she’d managed to keep her curiosity at bay. That didn’t stop the traces of magic from creeping in at the edge of her vision. In the back of her mind it formed a bright, sparkling space. You’re coming, she announced, pushing the fraying puzzle to the back of her mind.

The door clicked closed behind her and Meredith turned to face Malcolm again. His eyes shot around the room. I’m working, Babe.

That was what Meredith had expected. Malcolm hated all of the upper-class social events, but that wasn’t enough this time. She needed a date for the ball, and no one but him would do. You’re trying to get out of this party.

I’m tracking down a hostile. There’s a difference, Malcolm said, waving his hand at all the blurry bits of magic floating in the room.

Glancing at the tracking spells again, Meredith took a breath and asked, How fresh is your trail? The blurry, bright space where whatever he was tracking was headache-inducing. She didn’t understand how he could stand to stare at them.

    A few weeks old.

Then it’ll be here tomorrow, Meredith assured him. She hated pulling him away from the job. Working for the Magic Council had become an outlet for him in the last few months. Instead of being a glorified librarian for his family, he was branching out. It was also keeping him out of trouble and in turn smoothing out personal wrinkles in their relationship.

    But...

Cutting him off, Meredith shook her head and said, I will not face down your family or the rest of the community on my own, Malcolm. You knew what tonight meant, and you still ran off and made me hunt you down. It had hurt that morning, waking up with him still gone, and she’d been beyond angry when the afternoon rolled by without a word from him.

Dropping his hand, Malcolm gave her a confused look and tried to wiggle out of it. You’re not facing them alone. My mom loves you, and apparently my dad trusts you.

Stepping closer, Meredith sighed and hoped Malcolm could see how much
