How to Write a Short Story
So you want to write a short story. Good for you! There are a lot of reasons people write short stories, ranging from getting their toes wet in the world of writing fiction, to practicing crafting compelling stories in a short time frame, to just a general enjoyment of the form. Those are all fine reasons.
In this guide, we’ll talk about *story*—what it is, what it isn’t—before moving on to defining a short story, and then the nuts and bolts of writing a short story, to be followed by a ‘now what?’ conversation.
I know, I know. You want to skip ahead to the nuts and bolts, because darn it, that’s what you want to know. Well, I get that. But that’s like trying to build a house by getting right into the framing and drywalling without ever getting a foundation in.
You want that foundation. Believe me. Because that foundation will make your writing better, stronger, faster.
Or maybe that’s just the Six Million Dollar Man.
Nah. It’s all about your writing.
