Panic! Germs and the Truth Inside American Mouths - Aimee Tariq

    Beyond the Mouth

    Dr. Nicholas J. Meyer

In America, medical doctors are taught to specialize. This means conventional doctors and dentists do not treat the human body as if it functions as a whole. Many dentists forget there is an entire body beyond the mouth, and many doctors forget the mouth’s wellbeing affects the entire body. The human body is intricately connected and there is no better example of this point than the way in which teeth can control health and well-being. The connection between oral health and body health are awakening many doctors and dentists to begin working together for the complete well-being of their patients. Doctors and Dentists coming together is the future of dentistry and healthcare. In fact, in Germany dentists are required to be medical doctors. The fields of dentistry and medicine working together is important because every organ in the body is connected by the meridian system and the nervous system from the mouth. 95 percent of women with breast cancer have a dental involvement. Heart problems, stroke, cancer—all organ malfunctions can be connected to the teeth. Quite often people will have organs removed when they should really have removed the tooth affecting that particular organ. Healers, Doctors, and Dentists, need to be able to look at the big picture so that we can give our patients the BEST, because they only deserve the best. I appreciate the value in looking at the body as a whole rather than segmenting and limiting myself to only a part. The parts make up the whole, and the whole influences the parts; everything that happens in the body is interconnected. If something is off in one system, it has to affect others. I teach my patients that their mouth is both a gateway to the body and a mirror. The mouth is sacred- it offers direct access to the rest of their body, and, at the same time, reflects what’s going on inside.

When a patient comes to me with or without oral disease, I take a full history: chronic illness, medications, diet, exercise, stress levels, alcohol consumption, and smoking. Having cared for thousands of people across every demographic, income, and status, I have learned that oral health depends on a lot more than hygiene. Nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction all play as big a part in the health of teeth and gums as they do for the entire body. Shortly after I graduated, I put my private practice on hold so I could serve the community. I entered the correctional system as a practicing dentist at a maximum security prison in Illinois. Walking through iron gates to get into my dental office is an experience I will never forget. These two years working in prisons provided me with a wealth of human life stories, and as I listened to their stories I quickly realized that their dental issues had as much to do with their lives as with their teeth.

Every day I see first-hand how the complex interplay of all the systems that make your body work requires intricate balance. Disruptions in any one system require adjustments in all of them. Your body automatically seeks equilibrium, which is known as homeostasis. When your equilibrium is disturbed, your whole system is knocked off balance, and your body becomes stressed and wears down and ages faster. As I said before, the parts affect the whole, and through my decades of experience, I’ve seen how the mouth affects your whole body. An imbalance in the mouth can cause obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, erectile dysfunction, premature birth, and pregnancy complications, among other imbalances.

The principle behind wellness is balance and harmony. The biggest reward I receive in treating patients is their smile. When a patient no longer feels pain, or regains quality of life through sleep apnea therapy, this type of non-tangible reward can’t be explained or surpassed. I wish for everyone to know that healing is possible, and they aren’t doomed to a life of discomfort or pain. I come together in this book with Dr. Gladys McGarey, the Mother of Holistic Medicine, and Aimee Tariq, a passionate healer, to teach people about the incredible healing power of creating a harmonious environment in our mouths. It’s an unobtrusive power that can cure all. A power many people don’t even know they possess. A power I want to unlock in each of you.

    You hold the power within,

    Sincerely,

    The Mother of Holistic Medicine

    Dr. Gladys McGarey

Dr. Gladys (as she likes to be called) has devoted her entire life to changing the face of modern medicine. As we publish this book she turns almost 100 years old, so as you can imagine, she has seen so much! Almost 100 years ago today, her mother took one look at the Taj Mahal in India and began to feel birth pain. Dr. Glady’s knew how to make an entrance since Day 1. She was raised in India where both her parents worked as medical missionaries during the 1920s and she trained to become a doctor during World War II and the Great Depression. She has lived through and experienced measles, chicken pox, and almost any other virus you can imagine. During the Corona Virus Outbreak she was 99 years old and had a collapsed lung from a fall, but she was still practically running up and down the stairs. She has even survived cancer. There’s NOTHING that can hold this woman back. It’s no wonder she became one of the first female doctors despite all of the obstacles she faced. Besides shattering glass ceilings, she also created an incredible legacy that changed modern medicine and impacted the entire world.

Here’s a small version of the long list of changes we can thank and praise Dr. Gladys for:

✓There was a time when pregnant people weren’t allowed a birth plan, or even allowed other people present in the delivery room. Dr. Glady’s protected mothers’ and fathers’ rights by successfully advocating for fathers to be allowed in the delivery room.

✓Dr. Gladys was the first to utilize acupuncture in the U.S. and she trained other physicians to use it.

✓Dr. Gladys Co-founded the Academy of Parapsychology and Medicine.

✓Dr. Gladys Created the only ARE Clinic based on the work of Edgar Cayce.

✓The International Academy of Clinical Hypnosis started in Dr. Gladys’ living room!

✓Dr. Gladys taught safer birthing practices to rural women in Afghanistan, resulting in a 47% decrease in infant and young child mortality.

✓Dr. Gladys created a task force comprised of more than 100 holistic physicians and other professional healthcare providers to envision a new medical model in response to the need for healthcare reform.

✓Dr. Glady’s helped create the word holistic and the whole holistic movement.

Instead of a focus on healing, medicine was too focused on ‘getting rid’ of the things we don’t want such as pain, disease, and bacteria. So, instead of being ‘at war’ with our bodies, Gladys became passionate about life and living. She focused on the WHOLE person, not just the segments of a person’s body. This sparked a lifelong mission to explore holistic medicine, which led to Dr. Gladys co-founding the American Holistic Medical Association in 1978. As a pioneer of holistic medicine, she wasn't sure whether to spell holistic with h or wh. She decided to go with h to focus on holiness, health and healing. Now she is widely known as the Mother of Holistic Medicine.

Her work through her foundation, The Gladys Taylor McGarey Medical Foundation, has helped expand the knowledge and application of holistic principles through scientific research and education, and is helping bridge the gap between traditional and holistic medicine. Currently, she and her Foundation are actively involved in healthcare reform. Dr. Gladys is also the author of three books, The Physician Within You, Born to Live, Living Medicine, and most recently, an updated and revised version of Living Medicine.

The Foundation for Living Medicine was created from her visionary life - with the mission to create a healthier world by fostering our own capacity to heal and to further extraordinary legacies, regardless of age or medical history. Her belief is that we all have a physician within. Understanding the power of the physician within may help us listen more intently to our own inner wisdom that’s always ready to guide us.

I Dug Myself Out of The Grave

    Aimee Tariq

I was a senior in high school, president of every club, a cheerleader, and already finished with all of my high school credits to graduate with honors. I had received over a million dollars in scholarships, had several free rides, and could get into any college I wanted. I never drank, I never did drugs, and I worked hard. On the outside, it seemed like my life was perfect. Until the night it happened.

One night, as I tried to fall asleep after a long day of school and work, I felt my heart beating hard and fast, so hard it was hurting my ribs. My whole chest was shaking. We finally called 911. It was my first-time riding in an ambulance, and unfortunately, it wasn’t my last

For years I struggled. My heart rate stayed exponentially high, and my body lost significant weight. I couldn’t brush my own teeth, brush my own hair, or even have a simple conversation. I witnessed first-hand how people treat disabled people, the people whom they think can’t fight back. I experienced the worst of humanity. I also experienced the best. Amongst the bad experiences, I also saw the angels and saints who bring love and healing with grace and kindness. I focused on the love. But…being in this limbo, not dead and not alive, was the worst, and the hardest thing I had to go through. Being in this limbo is many people’s everyday reality.

I watched myself lose muscle and weight while there was nothing I could do. I watched myself go from a superstar athlete to someone who couldn’t even brush her own teeth. I watched as some people expressed happiness to see me so sick and withering away and I watched as they tried to take advantage of my weakness. There were times when I thought a quick death would’ve been much preferable to this agonizing, long, inferno. But I knew I had a deeper purpose, and that there was a reason I was experiencing this. I was going to make the most of my situation, even with my immobility. I don’t know how I kept fighting, but
