I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Also, the short stories were engaging and easy to read. As a kid in middle and elementary school, I took Spanish classes and did pretty well. This book gives me a refresher on the concepts I learned back in the day. The stories taught me the right way to use certain words and phrases in the context of a sentence. So overall reading this was a great learning experience for myself.

Paolo and The Siren

Paolo was a young boy who lives in Italy along the shore of a lake. Even the people and boats passing by could be seen from his house. When the weather was nice, and the sun was out, Paolo liked to play with his two brothers Marco and Pietro on the lakeside.

They often played ball, and the best was always Pietro. He would grow up to be a professional footballer.

When the weather was bad, Paolo remained at home instead, and from the window, he admired the waves of the lake that break on the rocks.

Paolo was sometimes a child who liked to be alone, and he loved walking by the lake and picking up the shells that the lake gave him.

One day he saw a siren come out of the water and come towards him. Paolo approached her and saw that the siren was crying and was very sad. Paolo asked her: Why are you sad?

Because my dad left me alone, said the siren.

Don't worry, I live near here, and tonight you can come to my house, eat and rest with me.

Paolo took the siren to his home. As soon as his mother saw the siren, she hugged her and started to compliment her. She had never seen a live siren, so she was very excited.

As soon as Paolo’s father saw her, he began to worry because she was not in the water and immediately took her to the pool outside the house.

Paolo entered the pool and started playing with the siren. Finally, she was quiet, and she wasn't crying anymore.

Are you happy now? asked Paolo.

Yes, I feel better now, but I always think about my dad, the siren answered.

The pool is beautiful, but I prefer to stay with my fish friends in the lake, she added.

Upon hearing this, Paolo ran to the pet shop to buy her a small goldfish. When he got home, he put it in the pool with the siren and said:

Are you feeling better now? You can become a friend of this goldfish.

The siren started to sing happily, and Paolo understood that she felt much better.

I'm happier than before, but I'm still a little sad because I think of my dad; he loved playing with me, and me with him. Also, I miss the pebbles, and the seaweed of the lake, replied the siren.

As soon as Paolo heard these words, he went to the pet shop and bought pebbles and seaweed to put in the pool. Immediately once he returned home, he said to the siren:

Are you happy now that you also have the pebbles and the seaweed you missed?

Yes, I feel better, but I'm still not happy because the lake is my home.

Ok, then I'll take you back to the lake and I'll say goodbye; will you be happy then?

I will feel better, but I'm not happy because I'll miss you. Why don't you come and live with me in the lake?

Paolo thought about how nice it would be for him to live in the lake. He could meet all the fish and play with them, he could play in the waves, but then he thought how sad he would be without his mother and father. So, he said:

Thank you, siren, but I won't come with you.

The family took her to the lake, and the siren turned the tail and disappeared into the middle of the water.

That night, before going to bed, the mom asked Paolo:

Are you happy?

I feel better, but I miss the siren, then he put the shell near to his ear to hear the sound of the lake, and he fell asleep thinking about her.
