PREFACE
T he purpose of this book is to open the minds of traditional thinkers about how certain skill sets do or don’t translate to other work streams. During the past six years, I have interviewed countless people that have had great skills but did not translate to the work stream they were applying for. As the interviewer was questioned, it became apparent to me that we were targeting the wrong kind of candidate. In Supply Chain, you look for Supply Chain minded individuals. This methodology has worked and does work but often times the better candidate does not apply because of traditional thinking. When Supply Chain professionals are asked to look
outside of Supply Chain to find someone with fresh ideas only a few industries are ever looked into. Manufacturing is an industry that is looked at for getting managers and leaders that have a different outlook on operations and that have a drive for the details.
Thinking about the logic of why the Manufacturing industry is pulled upon makes sense. The leaders are accustomed to having to complete work orders, making some part or product to specification with minimal variation, reporting hourly and speaking to gaps in performance. This is very similar to what is needed in Supply Chain. In this book, you will read about my concept of using Teachers as Supply Chain professionals. Teachers are detailed. Teachers have to be specific with lesson planning and they have accountability tailored to them and the school if they miss on educational focal points. They understand the importance that every child is unique and while the lesson plan may not tailored to that child specifically, their are programs and support that can be given to that child to help them meet educational goals. Imagine if this type of thinking, drive for excellence, ownership of their classroom, and care for their children was represented in a Supply Chain Supervisor or Area Manager. What would your turnover look like? What would your Engagement Scores reflect? Think about manager calibration and how much more challenging that would be when this type of leader enters the manager pool. This book will unpack this concept and the benefits of having this type of leader. We hope
