PREFACE
Words have power. I first learned this concept as a young girl when my childhood best friend Tina and I would eagerly exchange notebooks on her front porch while other kids played hopscotch or tag in the street. Tina’s notebook was filled with elaborate short stories, mainly inspired by the soap operas of the day. My notebook was filled with poems; sometimes silly and carefree, others filled with the romantic notions of a young girl. We couldn’t wait to read what the other had written, and we were, without a doubt, each other’s biggest fan.
The first time I learned that words can cause immense laughter was when, at the age of 10, I wrote a poem called Chitter, about a sweet little mouse who met with a devastating ending. When I read this poem to my parents one weeknight (they even turned off the TV to listen to me!), my Dad was so shocked at the ending of that story that he literally fell to his knees with laughter. He did not see that ending coming at all. Truth be told, they probably wanted to sign me up for therapy sessions after that!
I later learned that words can raise emotions that lead to tears. Not necessarily tears of sadness, but tears because the words touched someone’s heart and invoked emotion. My brother came across a folder
