Introduction
Some life experiences leave a lasting impact on you; my experience of being with one of my friends who used English as an arsenal in his pocket stayed with me.
Ever since my friend was a kid, he used English as the language to communicate with others. Be it during elementary school or college, everyone around him spoke in English. So he always thought that English was a language known to everyone, and there is no big deal about being fluent in it.
His belief about the language persisted for a long time until his cousin flew to our country searching for good job opportunities. She stayed at his home, applied to multiple companies, and secured a job interview opportunity with some of them.
She was a very bright candidate with numerous accolades under her belt. Unfortunately, however, she was not able to crack any of them. The reason, through all these experiences, was the same- lack of fluency in English.
She lived in a country where English wasn't the native language. While it was always a part of the school curriculum, students weren't very fluent in it due to a lack of usage of English in day-to-day conversations.
Later, when students flew to different countries in search of a bright future, they would often lose out on opportunities solely because of a lack of fluency in the English language. In fact, some companies asked for fluency in English even if they are not going to use that for the position. Clearly, people saw value in candidates with good English communication skills.
After understanding the problem, my friend and I started helping her with English. We would talk, ask her to share her opinions on the global news, and even express her views in the written format- all in the English language. As a result, her written and verbal fluency largely improved in a few weeks. She was now more confident and better prepared while appearing for interviews. So much so that she even cracked the interview process of one of the leading global consulting firms. The tables had turned!
My friend and I were thrilled to see our efforts bearing results. However, after going through the entire situation, I realized that thousands of people are immensely talented but lose out on opportunities because of poor English speaking and writing skills. That's when I decided to write this book to help with their English language-related needs.
With the world becoming a global village, English has become the globally accepted language for communication. For the ones with English as their first language, communication is never a hurdle. But for the remaining people, the language can pose a significant challenge. But not anymore! If English is not your first language, it can indeed become second. Or even third, if need be!
Through this book, I aim to help out anyone who is struggling in English. The book contains chapters dedicated to all aspects of the language- written as well as verbal. So it doesn't matter if you are just a beginner starting to learn the language or you want to brush up on the nuances of the language; this book will be of immense help to you.
Throughout the book, I have laid great emphasis on learning the basics. Remember, you can only understand the complex rules and improve your vocabulary if your basics are sound. Otherwise, it can be tough and stressful to graduate from one level to another in your learning journey.
I understand that starting your journey can be difficult, with many roadblocks on the way. You would need a great deal of motivation to continue the learning process, mainly because it is bound to involve some setbacks. Don't worry! The book takes care of that. We start by learning why the language is essential while discovering why people choose to learn English. This chapter will motivate you and keep you charged up to carry on your learning endeavors.
Science has it that learning English improves your communication skills and enhances your processing and decision-making skills. This enhancement is because the minds of bilingual people are relatively more responsive than others. In addition, there are a myriad of benefits that the language has to offer. As you move to the second chapter, you will explore all of these benefits while bolstering your belief in learning the language.
Before you set out to learn English, remember that the primary purpose
