Stacy Gleaton
Stacy Gleaton is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New Mexico and Texas. She has worked in multiple social work settings over the years. One such social work job was with Child Protective Services (CPS) in New Mexico, where she first professionally learned about foster care and adoption. Stacy then continued to conduct home studies, but this time in the private sector. In 2015, Stacy began working with the military population and found it to be generally mistaken as a poor resource for an adoptive family; she enjoys advocating for military families in their adoption journey. As a Christian, Stacy has found many similarities between adoption and her relationship with God. It is her hope that this book will give you the comfort and competence needed to begin your adoption journey! Stacy loves to hear and learn from adoptive families, so please email her at [email protected].

CHAPTER ONE
OVERVIEW OF THE ADOPTION PROCESS AND HOW TO GET STARTED
Adoption is the act of becoming legally responsible for a child, as if that child was your biological child. There are inherent rights and responsibilities of being legally responsible for a child. For example, you decide if your child will attend a public or private school, you decide the medical care your child will or will not receive, and you financially support your child.
The simple version of the adoption process is as follows. In order for a child to be adopted, that child has to be legally freed,
meaning that the legal responsibilities of their biological parents have to be ended in order for another adult (or adults) to be able to assume that legal responsibility. The prospective adoptive parents are required to complete and pass a home study. The adoptee is placed in their home. Then, the adoption is finalized in court. There are many contingencies involved to ensure each step is completed correctly.
Before you start your adoption journey, you will need to decide what type of adoption would best fit you. You can adopt a child from foster care through your state's Child Protective Services department or you can adopt a child through a private adoption (a child that is not in foster care). If you decide that a private adoption fits you
