CHAPTER ONE
WHY DO ORGANIC GARDENING?
Most organic gardeners aspire to live a more sustainable, clean, healthy, and earth-friendly lifestyle. However, there are numerous reasons why someone might opt for organic gardening. In this chapter, we will discuss the numerous reasons why you should choose organic. It is never too late to begin the organic transition, whether you are a novice or a seasoned gardener!
1Pesticides and Their Effects
Chemical pesticides are known to cause a variety of issues in the environment, health, and other areas. However, large corporations that profit from these pesticides frequently keep this information hidden. This leaves the general public befuddled about the consequences, despite their desire to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. Fortunately, while large corporations may try to conceal this information, they are unable to completely eliminate it. Let's look at what we know about these chemical-based pesticides and their risks in this section.
While you may believe that the use of chemical-based pesticides does not have long-term effects, the truth is that they do. In reality, these chemical pesticides persist in the soil, atmosphere, and even waterways long after they have been used. Because these have been used all over the world for nearly a century, there is a lot of chemical pollution in the atmosphere as a result of their use. The problems caused by chemical-based pesticides are only exacerbated by their continued use.
Why do chemical pesticides have such far-reaching negative consequences? The problem is explained in the Agricultural MU Guide for Pesticides and the Environment. Chemical pesticides must be able to travel within the soil in order to be effective. However, because pesticides have this ability, they can travel too far within the soil, contaminating a larger area than intended. This contaminates not only more soil than intended, but also water, the atmosphere, animals, and humans. These pesticides always spread and contaminate outside of their intended use area.
The United States government has released reports demonstrating that the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables has decreased due to the use of chemical-based pesticides. Between 1940 and 1991, the trace minerals in produce decreased by a startling 76%, which was directly related to pesticide use.
Many foods have a depleted nutritional value, according to research, and these foods contain residual pesticides from non-organic farming methods. Strawberries, tomatoes, spinach, potatoes, apples, grapes, celery, pears, kale, peaches, nectarines, and cherries contain a disproportionate amount of residual chemical-based pesticides after being grown.
These chemicals may aid in the control of insects, but in the same way that they kill and harm insects, they also harm the environment, animals, and humans. These chemical-based pesticides are simply not intended for human consumption because they are designed to kill and harm living organisms. It is easy to see how chemical-based pesticides can cause a slew of issues when consumed by humans. As a result, numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the issue.
A series of multi-university studies in Toronto concluded that people should limit their ingestion and exposure to chemical pesticides as much as possible because they have been linked to serious long-term illnesses. These pesticides have been linked to a variety of illnesses. They have been linked to nervous system disorders, infertility, asthma, depression, birth defects, Parkinson's disease, miscarriages, and even cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia, to name a few. The more pesticides a person is exposed to, the more likely they are to develop one or more of these diseases. Pesticides have been found in the bloodstreams of people with certain types of cancer, according to studies.
You don't even have to consume these pesticides to become contaminated by them. They can easily affect anyone as they travel through the soil, water, and atmosphere. In fact, they can be brought inside when pets and children are playing outside and come inside. Pesticides adhere to clothing, fur, or skin and enter the body, where they can be absorbed by the skin and enter the bloodstream, or they can be breathed in. This is most often caused by the use of chemical pesticides for lawn care.
According to a study conducted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor pollutants can be two to five times higher than those found outdoors. Indeed, indoor air pollution has been identified as one of the top four environmental health risks in the United States. Families suffer as pesticides, gases, and microscopic particles accumulate indoors.
Fortunately, you can significantly reduce this by making a change and going organic. You don't have to jeopardize your or your family's health. Even if you do not go organic in all aspects of your life, making a change and beginning organic gardening can significantly reduce the pesticides that your family is exposed to.
Advantages of Going Organic
Now that we've discussed the dangers of pesticides, let's look at the advantages of going organic. You are now aware of the consequences of not going organic, but the benefits of an organic lifestyle outnumber the drawbacks. Organic farming greatly benefits the environment and aids in its recovery from the harm caused by chemical pesticides. This is because organic farmers understand that if they care for the environment, the environment will care for them by providing them with nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. Not only that, but it reduces water pollution, topsoil loss, soil poisoning, toxic runoff, and the death of beneficial insects and animals.
To that end, organic farmers place a high value on the health of the soil in which they plant their seeds.
