Chapter 1: Introduction
Multiplication tables are essential tools in mathematics. They should be mastered in primary, but owing to the lack of emphasis - with more time spent on other activities - even some GCSE candidates are not as fluent as they should be. Paper 1 is non-calculator in the GCSE exam; candidates waste valuable time because they have not learned the tables fluently. This guide presents different methods to deal with this deficiency – some are familiar, and some new. The best method is the one the student likes and can remember easily.
Preliminary: Notation and finger numbering
The notation used here is standard and essential for succeeding chapters. The teacher must ensure the student is familiar with it.
