Anger Management for Men - Howard Hudson
Introduction
Anger is an inevitable part of life. Everyone experiences this emotion and there is no shame in it. It begins during the most tender years of existence. An infant may get frustrated when they cry because they want to be fed, but they get a toy to play with instead. A toddler may get upset when they are pushed to the ground by their elder sibling. A child may get angry when they are asked to help with chores. Such situations can conjure up feelings of frustration and may even end up with the child throwing a tantrum to vent their emotions. However, when you’re an adult, this type of behavior is frowned upon and stomping your feet while walking out of a room isn’t the best idea. So, what does this mean for you? Do you have to just suck it up and accept all the unpleasantness of the world? Do you have to bottle up your feelings while wearing a pretentious smile? The answer is a definite no! There are many ways in which you first acknowledge your anger, and then manage the emotion. The aim of this book is to assist men with a process that allows for them to express themselves in a healthy and non-toxic way. Anger can cause detriment, but if it is dealt with correctly, you can avoid catastrophic consequences and instead, learn more about yourself.
Men usually have a harder time expressing themselves because they believe that any sign of emotion is a sign of weakness. They see themselves as the alpha of the packs and exposing an emotional side to them is not something they would sign up for. This leaves them with one option, or seemingly so. They switch on to bravo-mode and opt for a hardcore approach. This results in them lashing out in anger, becoming oblivious to their surroundings, and in some cases, end up making matters worse. The truth is that you don’t have to tear things apart or cause an uproar to make your voice heard. You don’t need to conform to outdated ideas of how a man should react when faced with something that upsets him. Sure, the temptation of armoring yourself with a tough exterior can be tempting, but it isn’t really doing you any good. In fact, the less aggressive you are, the stronger you become. This is because rationality, which is one of the most powerful tools your mind can possess, takes over and keeps you from making impulsive choices that you would live to regret.
As a man, you may feel there are many expectations that people have of you. You play many roles and in almost all of them, you are seen as the person with the most amount of strength. This type of pressure can be the fuel to the burning blaze that anger instigates. You may be seen as the breadwinner, the protector, and the shoulder to lean on. Through all the stress and anxiety that these roles bring, you must know an important and undeniable truth—you are human too. Every person, no matter their gender, identity, race, or faith, deserves the proper guidance to find happiness. Although anger is an inevitable part of life, so is happiness and peace. When you find ways to control your anger and negative emotions, you will be able to see the beauty that life has to offer. Just because you are a man and are perceived as the more logical being rather than the emotional one, doesn’t mean that you don’t have emotions at all. You have an equal array of emotions as the next person, and it is vital to handle them with care and caution.
Each chapter of this book will highlight the important factors that need to be considered when you are engulfed in anger and long for solace. These steps will allow you to acknowledge your emotions, get to the root of it, and treat it well enough so that it no longer holds you captive. You can experience anger; it isn’t something to be feared. However, your anger shouldn’t control your actions. Your mind is stronger than any emotion felt. All you need to do is combine positive thinking with the logic of reality. You have the recipe to take back control and extinguish the flames of anger and torment. You are strong enough to overcome the barriers and obstacles that can come from deep-rooted anger. You can conquer the uncontrollable urge to act out in a heated fit of fury. This is essential not just for the sake of others, but for the sake of protecting your physical and mental wellbeing as well.
