INTRODUCTION TO BARBERING
T
his chapter dives into the exciting world of barbering, offering an in-depth look at its rich history from ancient roots to modern evolution.
Barbering's origins date back to ancient civilizations like Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Indus Valley, where grooming was both a practical necessity and a social ritual. Egyptians used copper razors, often replacing shaved hair with elaborate wigs denoting status. Mesopotamians and Indus Valley inhabitants also had developed grooming tools, reflecting their sophisticated personal hygiene practices.
Hair held deep religious and spiritual significance. In Egypt, priests shaved their entire bodies for purity, while in Greece and India, hair was integral to religious ceremonies and social status. The rise of specialized barbers in medieval Europe saw them performing roles beyond haircuts, such as minor surgeries and dentistry, symbolized by the barber pole.
During the Renaissance, barber shops became social hubs, separating barbering from surgical practices. In Asia, barbering traditions evolved uniquely, with itinerant barbers in China and specialized tokoyama in Japan catering to samurai and geisha.
