How can I distinguish a female quail from a male quail?
You can use any of the below four ways to identify whether a quail is male or female:
By checking on the physical appearance: Female quails appear bigger in size when compared with male quails of same age and breed.
By checking on the color pattern of their chests: Female quails have speckled feathers on their chest while the male ones have a plain chest. However, this method is only reliable on quails which have already grown enough feathers; usually at three weeks old and onwards. It is also effective on quails with speckled feathers.
Examining quail’s vent or cloaca: This is one of the most effective ways of distinguishing a male quail from a female one. There are two ways of examining the vent: First, when you press the area around it with your two fingers, a small ball-like lump may pop forward suggesting the bird is male. If the ball-like lump fails to show up then that signifies a female bird. Equally, when you press the vent, you may
