Exciting STEAM Activities around the Home for Kids - Carley R. Lester
Introduction
Science generally defined as knowledge or system of knowledge based on widely accepted, general truths or operation of general laws primarily as obtained and tested through scientific methods. Science has made life more comfortable, fun, and more convenient. It saves time, increases efficiency and precision of carrying out a task in the shortest possible time. It is a crucial element in socio-economic development.
Science proceeds in fits and starts of ignorance taking on the life a scientist requires absolute belief in things not certain, deriving pleasure in the unknown, and building a habit of second guessing. Science is a way of thinking much more than a body of knowledge.
Kids are unusually fascinated and excited at the prospect of learning new things. It gives them great joy and a sense of amazement to accomplish seemingly mundane tasks. So, it is safe to say that science is their niche. We have done a great job of making science seem so serious and reached a foregone conclusion that science is only for the mature intellectuals.
Children open their minds to vast possibilities and do not hold back, trying to think of the pros and cons of a process; they have nothing to lose. The glory of science is to imagine more than we can prove. Kids have a colorful mind; they question everything and anything. Nothing is out of bounds to talk and ask questions about. A scientist not only asks the correct questions but rather is one who provides answers and solutions to problems
Great inventions start as a hypothesis – a tentative phenomenon, a problem that can be subjected to further investigation, an assumption that is set out to be proven or debunked. A scientific experiment is a series of processes that are carried out to test a hypothesis. It involves observation, creating an alternative to the observation, comparison, and data collection, drawing inferences, and reaching a conclusion.
As kids grow, they become more inquisitive, excited to know, willing to explore and go against all the odds to satisfy their curiosity. Science experiments do not require more than that. Science experiments for kids can be as simple as constructing a catapult, or toy, preparing food products from raw food materials or already processed foods, determining why carbonated candies make pop sounds. Whatever it is, there is a goal in mind.
It is awe, an overwhelming mix of joy, amazement, and wonder, or even doubt, mystery and fear that children possess in abundance that stimulates curiosity, births creativity and births grand developments, or provides solutions to long-standing problems. This can, in turn, upgrade the standard of living, improve life and wellness, and in all, save humanity.
Every invention that we use today solves a particular problem that stemmed from asking questions. Questions from a child – ranging from simple questions about a product or a kitchen apparatus to the ones adults do not even have the answers for like how the stars can be preserved in a jar- should not be discarded as they might be the basis for the next big thing in science and technology. Nurture their curiosity; allow them to wonder out loud.
Involvement of kids in science has several advantages which include but not limited to:
Fostering teamwork; achieving great things sometimes requires several people. Being part of a science experiment enables a child to learn to settle conflicts, reach a compromise, persuade and influence people, and develop emotional intelligence.
Sharpening their communication skills; they can pass across their thoughts and reasoning clearly, listen, and embrace others' ideas. Science experiment teaches children how to simplify their message.
Teaching perseverance; it helps them to stay with an idea until it works. Their tenacity, patience, commitment, and sometimes obstinacy are developed, and they learn not to give up until they get results.
Problem solving mindset is instilled in
