INTRODUCTION
If I were to tell you that you’re about ten years ahead of most people in learning the value of money just by reading this book, would you believe me? It’s true! I didn’t realize how important it was and didn’t really start understanding until I was already out of college. I got my first job as a caddy when I was 12 and had part-time and summer jobs throughout school. I paid my bills but spent all the rest on having fun and traveling. I graduated with no car, $8000 in student loans and not a penny saved. How I wish I had this book to guide me from that first job! You’re in luck though, you have it. So, let’s get to learning, shall we?
Looking at statistical patterns, we can spot trends and predict future behaviors—like having our own fortune teller's crystal ball. For example, stats tell us which artist has the most listeners, what’s trending in the market, what videos just went viral, and who has the highest scoring average among our favorite sports players. In terms of finances, stats are great because they let us know exactly which path we're on regarding our financial health. But what does this have to do with gaining The Ultimate Money Skills?
Well, we need to turn to stats to understand what we're working with regarding our money and the future money we can make. Statistics show that the average American teen makes between $2,000 and $3,000 per month from part-time jobs and their allowance combined. Some teens may not have a part-time job yet and only have access to an allowance. In the future, when these teens begin working, they too will earn around what the stats predict.
These same stats show that everyday teens save about 2% of their earnings. That works out to between $480 to $720 saved per year for most teens. Not too shabby. Of course, that's just an estimate—some teens rake in way more bank from sweet gigs and numerous b-day checks and cash. But most are probably stashing away a few hundred bucks a year. Those stats look pretty good—right?
Not to be a downer, but there's another statistic we need to know: only 22% of teens actually know how to grow their money by investing and the magic of compound interest. Ouch! So, teens have much room for improvement when handling their hard-earned cash! Before we collectively freak out, there's hope on the horizon, so sit tight for a moment—we'll get to the good stuff soon! For now, we must know what we can achieve when we have the right money-savvy.
In the coming chapters, we'll cover:
the financial basics so that you have a better understanding of all things money-related.
money mindsets and how to have a great relationship with your cash from an early age.
how to earn money in many different ways.
how to budget, set financial goals, and balance what you need to spend your cash on with what you want to spend it on.
the skills required to make your money grow while you sleep.
what expenses, insurance, and taxes are, and why it's essential to budget for them.
how to build good credit without falling into common debt traps.
how to adapt and become agile when unexpected costs come up.
and so much more!
But before we move on to our first chapter and the information that can improve your life, one more burning question needs to be answered. What qualifies me to give my readers advice?
My name is C.K., and I've had a long and successful career in psychology. I started working as a case manager for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, moved into the classroom of a residential treatment center for teens and ended up counseling older teens and young adults who were homeless. While counseling teens, I came to realize that one of the most common reasons for their anxiety is money—or, more specifically, not knowing enough about money to move confidently into independence.
While there is a time and place for talk therapy, I am a solutions-driven kind of guy. So, I began to look for ways to explain finances to teens so that the anxiety they were feeling would turn to excitement for a bright financial future. It took some time and research, but eventually, I developed a learning model that works—and works well! It's called the Financial Independence Ladder.
You see, most teens are driven by a deep desire to become independent from their parents or adult guardians. They want to know that they can move out and thrive on their own or go away to college, graduate, and live a successful life. What I discovered is that most teen finance advice focuses on the what and how of money, but what teens really want to know is the why.
Why do we need to budget? Why save? Why rent or own a home? Why invest? The list is practically endless, and these are the questions I will answer for you. You'll receive practical advice using the Financial Independence Ladder as a framework and understand why this information matters.
The world is different from what it was when our parents grew up, and it will be a different place for our kids when we reach that stage of our lives. Providing the why allows every one of us to define success for ourselves and work toward this success with renewed motivation and a burning passion for reaching our goals.
So, with introductions now done, let's get down to business and
