Adolescent depression is a serious mental health condition that affects millions of young people worldwide. In this chapter, we'll delve into what adolescent depression is, its causes, symptoms, and the importance of early detection and intervention.
What is Adolescent Depression?
Adolescent depression is more than just feeling sad or down occasionally. It's a persistent and debilitating mood disorder that significantly impacts a teenager's thoughts, feelings, and behavior. While occasional mood swings are common during adolescence due to hormonal changes and developmental challenges, depression goes beyond the typical ups and downs. It can disrupt every aspect of a teenager's life, from school performance and social relationships to physical health and overall well-being.
Causes of Adolescent Depression
The causes of adolescent depression are complex and multifaceted, often stemming from a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Genetics can play a role, as depression tends to run in families. Additionally, imbalances in brain chemistry, particularly neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, can contribute to the development of depression.
