While many people think of deserts as barren wastelands, they are, in fact, thriving ecosystems full of life. These harsh landscapes host some of the most resilient species on the planet, each adapted in fascinating ways to survive and even flourish in an environment that seems inhospitable.
What is a Desert?
A desert is not just a barren, sandy stretch of land as many might imagine. A desert is a region that receives less than 10 inches (25 cm) of rain per year. This lack of water is the defining characteristic of a desert, and it affects every aspect of life there. Deserts can range from hot and dry to cold and snowy, each with unique features.
The two main types of deserts are:
Hot Deserts: Hot deserts, such as the Sahara in Africa or the Sonoran Desert in North America, experience extreme heat during the day, often surpassing 100°F (38°C), with temperatures dropping drastically at night. These deserts tend to have little to no rainfall, but they can be home to a variety of plants and animals that have adapted to the extreme temperatures.
Cold Deserts: Cold deserts, like the Gobi Desert in Asia or the Great Basin Desert in the United States, experience cold winters and can even be covered
