About this ebook

Getting my licence / Laiseni faka'uli is written in English and Tongan, presented in parallel text to facilitate language learning. This is the story of how one Tongan teenager managed to get his licence despite all sorts of unexpected problems when he was an apprentice in New Zealand in the late 1960's.  These were the days when getting your licence in New Zealand was much less regulated than today.  Sione Tapani Mangisi describes why he delayed taking up his employer's offer to teach him to drive and what happened when he damaged the boss's car in a parking bingle. The day of his test lurches from minor inconvenience to catastrophe with the testing officer an unwilling participant.

Getting my licence / Laiseni faka'uli - Sione Tapani Mangisi

    1. Apprentice duties / Fatongia ‘oe kau Ako ngāue fo’oύ

One of the duties for first year apprentices was to go up the road each day and buy lunch for everyone. Go round and get the orders, then take one of the work vehicles and go fetch lunches from a shop a kilometre or so up the road.

Koe taha e fanga ki’i ngāue ‘ae kau Ako ngāue fo’oύ, koe ‘alu ‘o fakatau mai e me’akai ki he kai ho’atā ‘ae kau ngāué. ‘Uluaki ‘alu ‘o tohi ‘enau ‘otá pea toki ‘alu ha me’alele ‘ae ngāué ‘o fakatau mai mei he fale koloa mahalo pe ki he kilomita pe ‘e taha hono mama’ó.

I started my apprenticeship in Wellington, New Zealand in February 1966 and quickly decided I really did not want to have to do this chore. The others didn’t mind and seemed to enjoy the opportunity to get away from the workshop and have a drive
