    STI VS STD

    Is there a difference ?

The terms Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) and Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings:

    Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI)

Definition: An STI is the presence of an infection in the body that is transmitted through sexual contact. This includes a wide range of viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi that can be passed from one person to another during sexual activity.

Symptom Status: STIs often do not show any symptoms. Many people can have an STI without knowing it because they do not display any signs of illness.

Focus on Infection Stage: The term STI emphasizes the infection stage of the illness. It recognizes that a person can be infected without having the disease, i.e., they can carry and transmit the infection without having any signs of the disease.

    Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)

Definition: An STD refers to the diseases that result from an STI. It is the advanced stage of an STI, where the infection has caused a significant medical condition or illness.

Symptom Status: STDs are characterized by symptoms.
