Networks can be classified broadly into two categories; Local Area Networks LAN and Wide Area Networks WAN. As compared to LAN, which could be as restricted as a home, office, or school, WAN covers very large areas and is used to connect more than one LAN in different towns, states, countries, or continents. It will therefore be important to understand the comparison between these two networks by comparing the functions of each depending on which one of them will suit the user's needs best.

Local Area Network (LAN)

LAN is a group of network devices that allow communication between connected devices. The private ownership has control over the local area network rather than the public. LAN has a shorter propagation delay than MAN as well as WAN. It covers the smallest area such as College, School Hospital and so on.

Uses of LAN

LAN is ideal when:

  • All the devices are located nearby, for example in one room or at least they are in the same building.
  • Real-time data transfer or file transfer and gaming require high bandwidth.
  • The primary of network control and security are seen since LANs are easier to monitor and control.
  • In some cases, the number of devices or users that need to be connected has to be limited and should not depend on other networks.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

WAN covers a larger area than LAN as well as MAN such as Country/Continent etc. WAN is expensive and should or might not be owned by one organization. PSTN or Satellite medium is used for wide area networks.

Uses of WAN

WAN is suitable when,

  • An equipment or office is located in more than one geographical area.
  • It is necessary to link several LANs for the organization of your data storage or use of common applications.
  • In multinational organizations, there is always need of communication between different regional offices in the business.
  • Levelling of reliance on external infrastructure like Internet or leased lines is still acceptable as a means of telecommunication for the long distances telecommunication.

Difference Between LAN and WAN

LANWAN
LAN stands for Local Area Network.Whereas WAN stands for Wide Area Network.
LAN’s ownership is private. But WAN’s ownership can be private or public.
The speed of LAN is high(more than WAN).While the speed of WAN is slower than LAN.
The propagation delay is short in LAN.Whereas the propagation delay in WAN is long(longer than LAN).
There is less congestion in LAN(local area network). While there is more congestion in WAN(Wide Area Network).
There is more fault tolerance in LAN.While there is less fault tolerance in WAN.
LAN’s design and maintenance is easy. While it’s design and maintenance is difficult than WAN.
LAN covers small area i.e. within the building. While WAN covers large geographical area.
LAN operates on the principle of broadcasting. While WAN works on the principle of point to point.
Transmission medium used in LAN is co-axial or UTP cable.Whereas WAN uses PSTN or satellite link as a transmission or communication medium.
LAN has a higher data transfer rate.WAN has a lower data transfer rate as compared to LAN.
LANs technologies used like ethernet and token. WANs technologies used like Frame Relay and X.25 for connectivity for longer distances.
LANs technologies is data transfer rate is 10mbps.WANs technologies data transfer rate 150mbps
LANs is cheaply compared to WANWAN is costly compared to LAN.
In LAN Co-axial cables are generally used to connect the computer and other devices. In WAN links are established using microwave or satellite.
Due to short distance short circuit error or other noise error are minimum. In this network, shortcircuit errors, noise errors are higher than any other network.
For eg: A computer lab in a college. For eg: pager

Conclusion

As we have seen, both LAN and WAN exist in networking with different roles depending on the scope and the users’ requirements in between. LAN is used for a small area where the transmission is rapid and accurate while WAN is used for long distance and is usually formed by connecting LAN’s in different locations. It is also possible to select the correct network configuration for a certain business or individual requirements by knowing the traits of such networks.
