Taking care of the remote team’s well-being isn’t just good for them, it’s good for business too. A happy, healthy team is a productive one. 1. Improve work-Life Balance - Remind the team that it’s okay to unplug after work. Set clear expectations about work hours, no one should feel pressured to be "always on." 2. Manageable Workload - Regularly check in with the team to see if they’re feeling overwhelmed. Distribute work fairly & track progress to prevent last-minute stress. 3. Keep the Team Connected - Celebrate small wins & recognize team contributions. Stay open for casual conversations, not just work updates. 4. Breaks and Time Off - Encourage people to step away from their desks, lunch breaks & take vacation days without guilt.

One thing I found helpful to ensure that burnout did not happen is literally power off your work equipment (i.e. laptop, phone, etc.) and step away for the day/weeekend. There may be some instances where you choose to work late if the team really needs help, but most days when your shift is done, turn everything off that has to do with work and focus on your life outside of your job.

What I have found helpful is setting clear boundaries. Even if you are overloaded with work, you must have clear boundaries for yourself. Burnout is a real problem folks are navigating in this world of remote work. I recommend setting a start and end time for each work day and putting your office in a room or a place that you can close the door and walk away from. If you have to work on the weekends to catch up, make sure you set a strict schedule and time limit on work so that you still take time off to focus on your personal life. Even if your work is demanding, make sure to prioritize yourself and take your vacation time. If nothing else, add extra days to your weekend instead of taking a full week.

In my experience working remotely, dedicated employees often overcompensate for the absence of an office environment by working beyond their regular hours. To address this, it is essential to establish clear work hours and help employees maintain a healthy work-life balance. One effective approach is to set firm boundaries regarding after-hours communication, ensuring that employees are not contacted outside of designated work times. Additionally, fostering an open environment where employees feel comfortable discussing any burnout they may be experiencing is crucial. By addressing individual concerns, we can collaboratively identify the underlying issues and develop tailored solutions to promote well-being and productivity.

Remote work has it's benefits as well as challenges. The burden of work as a result of being glued to one's system with limited physical interaction amidst several urgent deliverables are capable of causing burnouts. Manage or re reduce burnouts through the following means: 1. Organise virtual off work bonding session 2. Where feasible, organise one off physical bonding. 3. Create a 10-15 minutes weekly /daily virtual aerobic time for employees- all videos on and they are guided on how to stretch. 4. Provide EAPs. 5. Show empathy

Recognize early signs of burnout by conducting regular check-ins and pulse surveys to gauge employee well-being. Encourage open communication, promote flexible work arrangements, and ensure employees take adequate breaks. Implement wellness initiatives such as virtual wellness sessions, mental health resources, and workload balancing strategies. Foster a culture of support by training managers to identify stressors and proactively address them. Recognizing achievements and setting realistic expectations can also help sustain motivation and engagement.
