Congratulations to Mike Peppers - a past Houston Chapter President who has accomplished so many great things and contributed greatly to the profession - this is a well-deserved honor.
Fair warning…long, gushy post ahead! Last week at its International Conference in Toronto, I was so honored to be named recipient of the inaugural The Institute of Internal Auditors Inc. Global Internal Audit Legacy Award…the profession’s lifetime achievement award, if you will. As I said in my recorded thank you comments, it blows my mind that my colleagues would think it appropriate to use my name and the word “legacy” in the same sentence. For the better part of 40 years, I’ve just been doing what I truly loved doing…internal auditing. Along the way, though, I was blessed to have some incredible opportunities that set me up for service on this global scale. There are so very many people that supported me on this long journey but I will limit my comments to the three most significant facilitators and mentors. Steve Goepfert recruited me to presidency of the massive and impressive The Institute of Internal Auditors - Houston Chapter in 2003 and then facilitated my first stint on the Standards Board in 2006. Around 2010, I served on The IIA’s North American Board under Larry Harrington’s incredible leadership and ultimately became chairman. Global Board service began a few years later working with President/CEO/mentor/icon Richard Chambers, serving as Global Chairman in 2017-18. Richard then recruited me to arguably my most “legacy worthy” task of returning to the Standards Board as chairman to lead 21 international colleagues and talented staff to rewrite the guidance that was released last year as the new Global Internal Audit Standards. At the same time, current President/CEO Anthony Pugliese entrusted me with representing The IIA on the COSO Board. Thank you so much to each of these colleagues and friends…but there are so many others coming to mind. Please know that I remember all of those relationships and the great work and advancements we made together. You are all part of any legacy I have…and it was truly such a fun ride! Thanks also to my wonderful organization The University of Texas System for supporting my service to the profession while representing higher education, research, and healthcare. My IIA chairman theme in 2017 was #PurposeServiceImpact. As I say one more “thank you” for this honor, let me turn this recognition into an encouragement that each of you find your purpose, serve with all your heart, and you’ll make a lasting impact and legacy of your own! https://lnkd.in/grHKgVAG
