Californian Optical Switch Start-Up Benefits from $58 Million Worth of Further Investment Emerging photonics firm, nEye Systems has just completed its series B funding round. Interest in the high radix, MEMS-based optical switch technology that it is pioneering has resulted in hefty financial contributions from several industry heavyweights - including NVIDIA , Alphabet, CapitalG, M12, Microsoft's Venture Fund, Socratic Partners and Micron Ventures. The $58 million in financial backing secured during this round brings the total overall investment in the company, which was founded 5 years ago by UC Berkeley academics, to beyond $72 million. By providing direct optical connections, its switch devices have the potential to offer multiple orders of magnitude enhancements in terms of their speed, power consumption, size and unit cost. “nEye’s ground-breaking technology has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency and scalability of AI infrastructure,” James Luo, General Partner at CapitalG, comments. “Their innovative optical circuit switch addresses critical bottlenecks facing data centres and high-performance computing. We are thrilled to partner with Prof. Ming Wu and the entire nEye team on their audacious journey to redefine the landscape of AI computing.” “We are thrilled to have the support of CapitalG and our other esteemed investors as we scale our optical switch technology,” adds Prof. Ming Wu, nEye Co-Founder. “Our wafer-scale approach, backed by years of research at UC Berkeley, positions us to transform the AI fabric and enable the next generation of high-performance computing.” Tae Joon Seok Kyungmok Kwon Heng (Henry) Huang, Ph.D. Sergio Fabian Almeida Melissa Chaika Sobel Xiaosheng Zhang Dakai Z.
