✨ From Setback to Success — I DEFENDED MY DISSERTATION! 🎓 There was a time I didn’t think I’d get here. I left my first college due to grades and disappointment. At that time, I didn’t know that what felt like failure was actually the foundation for my future. I found a new path—one that reignited my passion for education👩🏽🏫, service, and making a difference. And step by step, I climbed back🧗🏽♀️. This moment is a testament that your setbacks don’t define you—your resilience does. Today, I am proud🥹 to say I have successfully defended my dissertation; Academic Coordinators’ Perspectives of Afterschool Programs’ Impact on Student Development: A Phenomenological Study and completed my doctoral journey. This work means the world 🌍 to me. My research explored the vital role afterschool programs play in supporting student success from the perspective of those on the front lines: academic coordinators. The insights gained through this study will contribute to strengthening afterschool program structures, advocate for holistic student development, and inform policies that prioritize academic📚, social🗣️, and emotional well-being😁🥲😫. I am beyond grateful—for every challenge, every detour🚧, every late night, and every person who reminded me that I was built for this. To my family, mentors, friends, and village: thank you for believing in me, even when I struggled to believe in myself. 💗💖💘 My story is proof that failure is not final. When you choose to rise📈, the journey ahead can be even greater than the one you imagined. This work is just the beginning. I look forward to leveraging my findings to impact lives, shape policy, and drive positive change in education and community development. Let’s continue the work to create educational spaces that heal, empower, and transform. See you on May 17th! #DissertationDefense #EdD #Resilience #StudentSuccess #AfterschoolPrograms #EducationalLeadership #ComebackStory #WomenInEducation #DeltaEducator #Gratitude #PurposeDriven #DoctoralJourney Lamar University College of Education & Human Development Kathryn Washington

Prayers for our fellow Texans
This past week has been one of the most challenging & proudest moments of my career in public communications. The City of Alamo was the first city in the region to officially declare a local disaster, taking immediate action to secure resources and respond to widespread flooding. As a two-person communications team, we hosted a live press conference, issued real-time updates every second we could, sent out media advisories & press releases and worked day and night to keep our residents informed and reassured during a time of crisis. While our police and fire departments carried out over 100 rescues, we made sure the public knew where to go, what streets to avoid, and how to get help all while managing a storm of information ourselves. Every photo, every video, every flyer, every edit done by us in less than two days, because our people deserved answers, clarity, & connection when they needed it most. It’s hard to put into words how much heart and hustle goes into community communications during a disaster. But one thing is clear: Alamo showed up for its people, and I’m proud to have been a part of it. 💚
