Pwe Practical 3: Light Dimmer: Ishmael Farai Chiremba 200907705

This document describes the design and testing of a light dimmer circuit. It includes: - The aim to design a light dimmer circuit powered by 220V AC mains that can operate a 100W light source. - A list of components used including resistors, capacitors, a potentiometer, triac, diac, choke coil and fuse. - Details of the circuit design including a diagram and explanations of how adjusting the potentiometer controls the light intensity by limiting the current. - The conclusion that the circuit worked as intended, allowing the light to dim continuously to zero brightness by varying the resistance and current.

AIM
The aim of this practical is to design and build a light dimmer circuit that is going to be powered
by 220V AC, 50Hz mains. The light source in the circuit should be able to operate at a power of
100W.

APPARATUS

Resistors (1/4W,5% carbon)

-1 x 2,2K
-1 x 10K
-1 x 180K
Capacitors
-1 x 150nF/400V (dipped polyester)
-1 x 47nF/630V (dipped polyester)
-1 x 0.22uF/250V (AC dipped polyester)
Potentiometer 250K
Triac 2N6075 or BT136-500D
Diac (HT-32)
Choke coil (100uH)
Terminal blocks
2A/3A fuse

CONCLUSION
The circuit worked perfectly and the ight could dim to zero brightness because as you increase the
resistance you limit the current in the circuit and the intensity of the light reduces but as you decrease
the resistance more current moves towards the light bulb and then the intensity increases.
