Procedures For Using Lecia DNA03 Digital Level
Firstly, measure and mark using either wooden stakes or paint for each set-up between two benchmarks prior to setting up the digital level. Make sure you mark all positions for backsight, foresight. Same marks can be used for the double-run. Sight lengths cannot exceed 35 meters
1.2 Initial Instrument Settings 1.2.1 Digital Level Settings Units are set to meters 5 Decimal Places recorded (e.g. 0.00001) Record Data to Instrument Earth Curvature Turned OFF Apply Daily Collimation to Measurements (also note in digital data files that this correction has been applied to all measurements) Measurement Type is Mean with Standard Deviation Set Maximum Standard Deviation = 0.1 mm at 60 meters Minimum Number of Measurements = 5 Maximum Sight Distance = 60 meters Minimum Sight Distance = Instrument Specific (See Manufacturers Manual) Individual Setup Imbalance = 5 meters Accumulated Imbalance per Section = 10 meters Set Instrument to BFFB Measurement Mode (Backsight ,Foresight, Foresight and Backsight)
1.3 Collimation Tips: Allow the instrument and rods to acclimate prior to performing the collimation and/or leveling (allow the equipment to adjust to the working environment for 10 minutes or more). Perform Collimation check on level ground at the work site in the work environment. Perform a Collimation check at the beginning of every day that geodetic levelling is performed or when the level is jarred or any time there is a question about instrument. Perform a Collimation check whenever the ambient temperature changes more than 10 degrees celsius during the course of leveling during the day. It is critical to remove parallax and sharply focus the instrument. Ensure instrument and rods circular levels are in adjustment. Record collimation (arc-seconds) on Backup Recording Sheet.
Apply (A x B x) - Kukkamaki Method for this precise levelling. Figure 16: Kukkamaki Method Instrument Positions. Note: Total Distance as described in Leica DNA03 manual is 45 to 60 meters total distance; the figures by the left shows a 60 meters total distance.

Check all rod level bubbles with the level instrument to ensure vertical accuracy and adjust if necessary:
Level the instrument and have the rod person set up a rod on a stable highpoint.
First, have the rod person hold the rod facing the level. Using the level's vertical crosshair
as a reference, instruct the rod person to hold the rod perfectly vertical. If the bubble is touching, or out of, the centering circle it must be adjusted.
Next, have the rod person hold the staff sideways to the level. Using the level's vertical
cross-hair as a reference, instruct the rod person to hold the rod perfectly vertical. If the bubble is touching, or out of, the centering circle it must be adjusted. If the circular level bubble of the level equipment needs adjustment, first secure the rod using struts. Then with a plumb bob, check the verticality of the rod from two observation directions at right angles to one another. Then use the three adjustment screws beneath the circular level to bring the bubble into the middle. Make sure the bubble stays in the middle, when the rod is turned at two different directions at right angles to each other. Make note of the value Coll.err.new. This value is required later on when entering code information into the level. A value less than or equal to +/- 10.0 arc seconds meets the standard while any value larger than +/- 10.0 arc seconds exceeds it. Scroll to <QUIT> and press . DO NOT SET THIS VALUE! If you mistakenly execute set,
make a note and inform OET. The stored collimation error should always be 0.0. If the collimation check fails, rerun it for verification. First, double-check the course setup for proper layout. If the instrument was recently brought out from a much different thermal environment, give it additional time to adjust to the ambient temperature. If the level continues to fail the collimation check, note the last value determined, continue on with the levels, and notify OET. There is no way to adjust the level in the field, it must be returned to Leica for adjustment.
Make Sure Earth Curvature is SET to OFF From the PROGRAMS screen, select 2 LINE LEVELLING then press the [enter] key. From the LINE LEVELLING - START screen, select 2 LINE then press the [enter] key. Press the [USER] key. From the CODE & ATTR ENTRY screen, key in the following equipment information: Code: 2 (Code number identifier Start of day or Equipment change) Info1: 342924 (Information Block 1 DNA03 Serial Number 342924) Info2: -25 (Information Block 2 Collimation with sign; no decimal point) Info3: 52859 (Information Block 3 Rod #1 S/N) Info4: 52846 (Information Block 4 Rod #2 S/N)
Highlight <REC>, then press the [enter] key. The Section is ready to begin ready to take first measurement enter beginning of section information.
From the CODE & ATTR ENTRY screen, key in the following starting section information: Code: 11 (Code number identifier Beginning Section Information) Info1: 0958 (Information Block 1 Time, 24 hr; hh mm) Info2: 1 (Information Block 2 Rod # on mark) Info3: 293 (Information Block 3 Starting temperature, no decimal point) Info4: No entry -leave blank
Highlight <REC>, then press the [enter] key. Then click on START Point instrument at Backsight, focus, press [Measurement Button], monitor standard deviation, etc. Point instrument at Foresight, focus, press [Measurement Button], monitor standard deviation, etc. Then lift the Tripod up and reposition it at the same position with a different elevation, set the bubbles, then again, Point instrument at Foresight, focus, press [Measurement Button], monitor standard deviation, etc. Finally, Point instrument at Backsight, focus, press [Measurement Button], monitor standard deviation, etc. BFFB has been achieved. Check the difference between (Diff F1F2) and (Diff B1B2). It should be close to 0.00001. Click STAT When the screen appears, there is a value on the staff line (represented by x.xxxxx). As the Count - the number of readings being taken by the instrument increments by 1, numbers will appear on the sDev, sDevM, and Spread lines. sDev is the standard deviation of a single measurement, sDevM is the standard deviation of the mean of all the current measurements, and Spread is the difference between the maximum and minimum readings of all the current measurements. The Count will range from 5 to 8, depending on sDevM. The allowable sDevM/20m is set to 0.00003 m. This means that for a full 60 m shot, the sDevM has to be less than or equal to 0.00009 m (0.00003 m x 60/20). This meets the FGCS standards requirement stated in Section 1.2 of 0.1 mm for a minimum of 5 readings. When setup is complete and acceptable, tell back rod person to move forward for next setup.
