Dear Teams: I wanted to let you know Baja SAEINDIA2012 updates and changes happening as we head towards Virtual Baja planned on 19th and 20th of August 2011 at Bangalore and final event on 17th-19th Feb 2011 at Pithampur. This is first official communication you are receiving from me and will be followed by many on behalf of Organizing Committee at regular intervals. We had successful Steering Committee (SC) and Organizing Committee (OC) meeting followed by press conference at Mahindra Towers, Worli, Mumbai on 29th July 2011. Great deal of efforts were put in by Ankur Anand, Subodh Morye and Mahindra team to make meeting and press conference a grand success and I take this opportunity to thank them here. I am sure that many of you will read or watch about it in newspapers or on television. Lot of good decisions were made by Steering and Organizing Committee after having meaningful discussions. By now, most of you are aware of engine finalization, e-baja and zero tolerance policy through facebook. Update below will take you through more details and try to resolve some of queries and concerns you raised through facebook comments: 1. Engine Finalization - I am starting with good news for you. Briggs & Stratton decided to become official co-sponsor for the Baja SAEINDIA 2012. What does it mean is having engine which will enable you to participate in international Baja competition. This decision was taken keeping long term Baja objectives in mind and bringing Baja SAEINDIA at the same level of international competition. Engine selected is INTEKTM 10HP OHV 305 engine from Briggs and Stratton. This engine will be available at very competitive and subsidized price to you from B&S. Detail pricing and 3-D CAD iges models will be made available on Baja SAE INDIA website shortly along with ordering process. As is imperative, the previous years teams with the Lombardini engine would also be required to make a switch to the new engine. An interim workshop will be held to demonstrate Briggs and Stratton vehicle integrated with Baja Vehicle at Virtual Baja display stall. You are required to gain as much as you can through this avenue. All students would report as per the slots allotted to them. While ordering the engine we recommend you to order spare air filter and save it for the final battlefield at Pithampur. Virtual Baja - The Virtual BAJA is planned on 19th 20th August 2011 at Dayananda Sagar Institutions, Bangalore. Time slots are defined and allotted for the teams to complete the event in given time. You are requested to strictly follow the timings allotted to your team. Many of the teams raised concern over work teams already did and efforts put together to design, analyze, and integrate the Lomabardini engine. We are aware of the dilemma being faced by all of you in respect of the engine and thus, the teams would be judged for the use of both B&S and Lombardini engines. The teams that would be presenting the design considering Lombardini engine would be required to share a plan for implementation of B&S engine with a suitable powertrain. e- Baja It is great pleasure to announce that first e-Baja vehicle will be launched and run on the track at Pithampur. This is first of its kind among all international Baja events. Mahindra Reva Electric Private Ltd. is partnering with Baja SAEINDIA to make this happen. One willing team from each zone will be selected on Virtual Baja merit and installed with Reva electric drivetrain by Mahindra Reva Electric Private Ltd. Baja teams shall provide design of these vehicles to Mahindra Reva. a. Mahindra Reva would fabricate and validate the vehicle, and once validated, the teams would be required to re-build the vehicle under the supervision of Mahindra Reva. b. Please note that due to safety concerns, these vehicles would NOT be handed over to the teams.

c. d. 4. The team and the institute would receive the branding, and more importantly the technical know-how. These vehicles to participate in all BAJA events but would NOT compete.

0(zero) T(tolerance) Policy - It is unanimously agreed during SC and OC meet that SAFETY is nonnegotiable and we will have Zero Tolerance Policy towards it. As per the Zero Tolerance policy of BAJA, the teams are required to fully comply with the BAJA SAEINDIA Technical Guidelines and rulebook. Failing this, the teams would be ineligible for all BAJA SAEINDIA Awards and also for dynamic events. Thus, you are suggested to plan your project accordingly. BAJA Information Kits -We have prepared a detailed kit for participants of BAJA. It is a self sufficient guide to a successful participation in the event. Please do not forget to collect the same during virtual BAJA. A BAJA Participants Registration Form has also been prepared for teams selected for main event. This would substantially reduce the documentation and paperwork required by the participants and allows you to focus towards building your vehicles.

Lastly, I warn all teams not to tamper the engines you are procuring from B&S as otherwise specified in the rulebook and technical guidelines. Any changes in governor setting, carburettor jet and engine exhaust system not only automatically disqualify you from the event but also dangerous from safety perspective. Above list is not exhaustive and I recommend you to refer rulebook and technical guidelines for safe practices. I look forward for energetic and enthusiastic participation from you at Virtual Baja.
