Development of Peri

The document describes pre-natal development of the face and peri-oral region from week 5. It notes that the medial nasal prominences fuse in the midline and maxillary processes fuse with medial nasal processes to form the upper lip. The maxillary and lateral nasal prominences separated by the nasolacrimal groove develop into the cheeks and maxillae. The mandibular prominences merge to form the lower lip and chin. The nose forms from the frontal, medial nasal and lateral nasal prominences. The primary palate develops from the intermaxillary segment between the medial nasal prominences.

Pre-natal Growth and Development

DEVELOPMENT OF PERI-ORAL REGION

FACE
o

medial nasal prominences grow to midline

Medial nasal processes fuse in the midline.

By week 5 the face has: o 5 facial prominences plus o 2 nasal placodes Nasal placodes are ectoderm induced by ventral forebrain. Nasal placode Maxillary prominence

Maxillary processes fuse with medial nasal processes.

-During week 5: Nasal placodes invaginate and form nasal pits. Two new prominences appear: o lateral nasal prominence o medial nasal prominence

Development of the Upper lip two medial nasal prominences two maxillary prominences

Over the next 2 weeks o maxillary processes increase in size o maxillary processes grow to midline

Pre-natal Growth and Development

Development of the Face Maxillary and lateral nasal prominences separated by o nasolacrimal groove Development of the Cheeks Cheeks develop from the maxillary prominences.

Development of the Maxillae Develop from maxillary prominences.

nasolacrimal groove. o invaginates to form the nasolacrimal duct o upper end becomes lacrimal sac

Development of the Lower Lip Mandibular prominences merge in the midline. mandibular prominences

Development of the Nose The nose is formed from: o frontal prominence: bridge o medial nasal prominences: crest and tip o lateral nasal prominences: alae

Mandibular prominences merge in the midline.

Intermaxillary Segment 2 medial nasal prominences labial component - philtrum of upper lip upper jaw component - 4 incisor teeth palatal component - primary palate fuses with nasal septum from frontal prominence
