Development of Tongue

The tongue develops where the stomodeum and pharynx meet. The lateral lingual swellings from the first arch give rise to the mucosa of the anterior 2/3 of the tongue, while the hypobranchial eminence mostly from the 3rd arch gives rise to the posterior 1/3. The hyobranchial eminence develops at the level of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th arches, with little contribution from the 2nd arch.
