Protocol for Commitment by Society Members to Training

The on-going maintenance of the enviable safety record of the liquefied gas shipping and terminal operations industry is critically dependent upon the commitment of LNG operators to ensure a stable and secure supply of motivated and well trained personnel to the industry. It is strongly recommended that all Members of SIGTTO comply with the following protocol. 1) Shipping Ensure that there are suitable cadet training schemes for the vessels which they control, for both Engineer and Deck Cadets. Recruit and train sufficient cadets to meet the future manning needs, both onboard and ashore, ensuring self sufficiency in staffing. Encourage career development through the company, meeting the aspirations of the seafarers, from cadet to senior ranks. Design new build vessels with sufficient accommodation for cadets and trainee officers. Develop and maintain accredited competency-based training programmes, both ashore and at sea, that meet the recommendations of the series of SIGTTO publications collectively titled Suggested Competency Standards. 2) Terminal Operators Have in place training programs which follow industry recommendations from SIGTTO and OCIMF. Develop and maintain a competency based and audited training scheme that demonstrates effective development for terminal operating staff associated with loading and/or discharging liquefied gas ship and maintenance of the jetty and its equipment.
