Experiment 1 Chemistry STPM Practical (2011)

Experiment 1 performed a volumetric analysis of an acid-base reaction to determine the concentration of a mineral acid (HXO4) and the relative atomic mass of the unknown element X. Phenolphthalein indicator was used to titrate a solution of OH- ions with HXO4, and the titration readings were recorded. The concentration of HXO4 and relative atomic mass of X could then be calculated using the titration data and molar relationships. The identity of element X was determined by comparing its calculated relative atomic mass to the periodic table.

Experiment 1- VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS: ACID-BASE Purpose: To determine the exact concentration of a mineral acid, HXO4 and to determine the

e relative atomic mass of element X.

Materials:

KA 1is a mineral acid, HXO4 KA 2 is a solution containing 1.70g of OH- ions per dm3 Phenolphthalein as indicator

Procedure: Pipette 25.cm3 of KA 2 into the titration flask. Add two or three drops of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate this solution with KA 1. Record your findings in the table below

Results: Record your titration readings in the table below: Titration Final readings ( Initial readings Volume of KA 1 ( ) Rough Accurate Second

Concentration of KA 2 Answer this question and you know how to change it to

Ionic reaction Just take acid neutralise a base

Concentration of KA1 M1V1=m2v2 RMM of HXO4

Figure it out. Pick one. Or do it with what method that is deemed possible. RAM of X: You already know the relative atomic mass of hydrogen and oxygen. You already know the RMM of the compound. Subtract from it.

Identifying the identity of element X Element X can be anything, maybe even impossible element like Uranium or plutonium. It is all based on your calculation. Check periodic table for more information.

Hint: whoever copy directly will get some surprise. If you dont want any nasty surprises, study now.
