All forms of cheating and plagiarism are strictly prohibited at East Union. Students are expected to conduct themselves honestly and with integrity when completing their schoolwork. Behavior that is unacceptable includes, but is not limited to: copying another students work working with others on work that is meant to be done individually allowing another student to look at or copy your answers taking a test or quiz in part or in whole to use or give to others giving work to another student Plagiarism is defined by KEYS FOR WRITERS (2nd edition) as when you deliberately or inadvertently present someone elses actual words or even ideas as if they were your own, for example if you: include in your own essay a passage, an identifiable phrase, or an idea that you have copied from someone elses work without acknowledging and documenting your source use exactly the same sequence of ideas and organizations of argument as your source fail to put an authors words inside quotation marks use in your paper long sections that have been rewritten by you, a friend, or a tutor buy, find, or receive a paper that you turn in as your own work Violators of this policy will be disciplined. Disciplinary measures are as follows: First Offense Second Offense - No credit on the assignment/test - All first offense penalties - Parent contacted by teacher - Suspension from school (1-5 days) - Referral/conference with a Vice Principal - Placement of offense on students permanent record Third Offense Fourth Offense - F grade for the class - EXPULSION - Parent contact by teacher - Mandatory 5 day suspension - Student placed on expectations plan Turnitin.com East Union subscribes to Turn It In, an on-line program which searches the internet and cites text that is a perfect match with the student paper that has been submitted. It is effective and clearly shows matches in text, which can then be evaluated by the teacher as plagiarism or not, and can be documented for student and parent review if desired. Students will be directed by teachers to use this site when appropriate. For these assignments, the date of upload to the website will be stipulated, and the student will be expected to submit proof of submission and date from Turnitin.com, along with the hard copy given to the teacher on the date work is due in class. As with all work, there will be penalties in the form of a percentage loss of credit (at teacher discretion) for late submission and late work.
