Value mapping is a method to visually map the flow of materials and information from raw materials to finished products. It involves mapping the current state and drawing a future state map with lean improvements to reduce waste. Key steps are identifying the product, mapping the current state on the shop floor, assessing for flow, and drawing a future state map. Benefits include visualizing production processes, linking information and material flows, and prioritizing a plan to achieve the future state. Disadvantages can include not mapping multiple products or relating delays.

MARATHA MANDIRS BABASAHEB GAWDE INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES TOPIC: Value Mapping

SUBJECT: Financial Accounting SUBMITTED TO: Prof. Ganachari SUBMISSION DATE : 17th November 2011.

Definition
Value Mapping is a method of visually mapping the flow of materials and information from the time products come in the back door as raw material, through all manufacturing process steps, and off the loading dock as finished products.
This is also known as Value Stream.

Contd.
The process includes mapping "current state" while also focusing your "future state"

Lean improvement strategies. A key metric associated with value stream mapping is lead time. Value stream mapping is a recognized method used as part of Six Sigma methodologies.

Steps in Value Mapping

Identify the target product, product family, or service.
Draw while on the shop floor a current state value stream map.

Assess the current state value stream map in terms of creating flow by eliminating waste.
Draw a future state value stream map.

Work toward the future state condition.

Benefits of Value Mapping

Helps visualize the production process at the plant level

not just the single process level. Shows the linkage between the information flow and the material flow. Forms the basis of an implementation plan. Ties together lean concepts. Draw a blueprint -the Future State Map. Prioritize activities needed to achieve the Future State.

Disadvantages of Value Mapping

Fails to map multiple products that do not have identical material flow maps.
Fails to relate Transportation and Queuing delays.

Fails to changes in transfer batch sizes due to poor plant layout and/or material handling.
Requires training on symbols and mapping

techniques.
