Requirements for the naturalization process

Essential Requirements to kick start the process


Being 18 yrs or older is the most basic criteria Form to be used : Form N-400 and not Form N-600

Valid green card

Green card
Should be living with the US citizen spouse through which the status was obtained Military personnel with permanent resident status

Green card holder for the past 5 yrs Green card holder for the past 3 yrs if on conditional residence Should have at least 1 yr of military service or 6 months of discharge Spouses of US citizens who had served in a past war or currently serving can file in for naturalization earlier

Continuous Residence & Physical Presence

At least 5 yrs in the US prior to filing in the application For permanent residents 2.5 yrs of physical presence At least 3 yrs in the US For conditional residents 1.5 yrs of physical presence
All Applicants must have resided in their primary address( That is on the N-400 form) at least 3 months , prior to filing

For the citizenship test

Knowledge of basic English Aware of the Civics and Constitution of the United States

Should be able to read, write and speak Should be able to answer at least 6 out of 10 questions correctly.

Applicants over 50/55 yrs of age and 20/15 yrs of permanent resident status are exempt from the English part of the citizenship test.

Last in the list..

Finally the applicant should be a person of good moral character and be willing to abide by the laws of the US Constitution
