ASEAN began in 1961 with Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines establishing a voluntary association for economic, social, and cultural cooperation, but it halted after two years due to shifting international politics. Indonesia and Malaysia later restored relations, leading to the establishment of an economic cooperation organization in the region. ASEAN was officially formed in 1967 when foreign ministers from five Southeast Asian countries - Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand - signed the Bangkok Declaration to promote economic growth, social progress, cultural development and peace and stability in Southeast Asia. The purpose of establishing ASEAN was to provide external security for member countries in response to fears about the spread of communism during the Cold War era.
