Session 1: What is Community Development?

Definition: Community Development


Community Development empowers people by giving them the skills they need to make change in their communities.

3 Parts of Community Development (The 3 Es)

Educate = To give or share knowledge or training through school or study

Enable = To give or share materials, knowledge, or opportunity

Empower = To give or share power with someone

Values of Community Development


A value is something that is important. There are 9 values, or things that are important, of community development.

Value 1: Fairness
Fairness means treating people equally and reasonably No favoritism No self-interest No bias

Value 2: Equality
Equality means being equal or the same.

Value 3: Accountability
Accountability means that you are willing to take responsibility for your actions.

Value 4: Opportunity
Opportunity means having a good chance for advancement or progress.

Value 5: Choice
Choice means being able to choose something freely

Value 6: Participation
Participation means being active in the community and any projects.

Value 7: Mutuality
With mutuality, members of an organization and community share both profits (the money you get), and expenses (the money you spend).

Value 8: Reciprocity
Reciprocity means an equal exchange.

Value 9: Continuous Learning


Continuous learning means that youll never stop learning or looking for more information or new knowledge.

Activity Break

Break into groups and take 20 minutes to review these 9 different terms. Complete the worksheet given to you. After 20 minutes, you will present your worksheet to the class.
