Jazz Performance Rubric

The rubric assesses a jazz performance on six criteria: intonation/tone, knowledge of instrument, sense of time, knowledge of melody, knowledge of chords, and level of creativity. A student must demonstrate the ability to perform a jazz standard melody and improvise over chord changes using various techniques, and may choose to use a play-along recording or live combo. Their performance will be evaluated on a scale from poor to excellent in each criteria to determine a final grade.

Rubric To Assess Jazz Performance

Performance Task:

Student must successfully demonstrate the ability to perform the melody of a jazz
standard, and improvise over the chord changes using a variety of techniques
according to the outlined criteria below. Student may either choose to use a playa-long recording or a live combo during his or her performance.

instrument with ease and
flexibility. Able to utilize
different articulation styles.

Sense of Time:
Able to internalize the tempo and
maintain a steady pulse with the
other players.

Knowledge of Melody:
Able to perform the melody with
accurate notes and rhythms.

Knowledge of Chords:
Able to follow the chord changes
by utilizing related scales and
patterns.

Level of Creativity:

Able to utilize a variety of


improvisational techniques such
as pitch range, dynamics, melodic
phrasing, quotes, rhythmic
variation, and sequencing.
