Reference Collection Evaluation and Materials List Amanda Porter FRIT 7737

General Overview After discussing the status of the reference section with the SLMS, I learned that the reference section is not a priority when it comes to purchasing new materials. This is largely due to the fact that the majority of research sources are now available online through the Internet and Destiny. Online and digital resources allow for easy updates, pictures, and tags to articles or other sites. In addition, teachers do not use the sets of encyclopedias in the media center because they use Encarta Encyclopedia software or other online resources in the computer labs. The reference section is outdated and the circulation is low. Class sets of dictionaries and thesauruses are the materials used most frequently. Supplementing specific nonfiction resources within the collection will be a priority, in addition to some reference titles. With the implementation of the Common Core Curriculum, a wider variety of updated nonfiction titles will take precedence over new fiction books. Dewey and Description The reference collection consists of 928 titles. The average publication date of these materials is 1998, with an average age of 14 years. There have been 2,067 circulations. Most of these are general encyclopedias, atlas, and material about people. The bulk of the titles classified as Reference are encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesaurus, atlas, and other similar materials. However, there are a wide variety of miscellaneous titles in the reference section. Some of these titles include specific cultural information, including People of Africa, Chronicle of the popes, and A Teachers treasury of quotations. Other titles

include broad scientific of historical concepts, including North American Wildlife. Numerous of these books are outdated and old yet in good condition. The Dewey Decimal portion of the collection consists of approximately many titles. The majority of these titles fall within the Science and History/Geography sections. The middle school has a wide variety of titles covering specific curriculum areas: science, history, healthy, nature, animals, religion, and political science as well as small areas of student interest. There are very few titles within the 600-699 portion of the Dewey Decimal collection. Budget Summary A district-level budget is no longer allocated to schools within the county. This makes purchasing additional books and materials quite difficult. SPLOST funding is the primary source of budget resources. The school receives $10,000 book allotment a year. They are only allow to use certain vendors. The school usually uses Follett, and Junior Library Guild. Equipment budget is $5,000 a year with the same protocol using vendors that have been pre-approved by the county. Common Core Curriculum Full implementation of the Common Core Curriculum began this 2012-2013 school year. Due to increased emphasis on non-fiction texts, West Hall Middle Schools media center is in need of up-to-date references titles that support specific curriculum topics. Many of the titles listed in the materials list are based on science and social studies topics. These titles will support student research and help to develop information literacy skills. Some of the chosen resources include general topics, such as American History or Famous Inventors. Almanacs and Atlases were included to also cover a variety of concepts. However, many titles were selected

for specific grade levels and needed areas for grade-wide projects. The current books for these topics were outdated from 1998 and history has changed so much since then. For example, 6th grade covers Latin America and Canadian culture, in 7th grade Africa, and 8th grade Georgia History. I chose to order books based on the 6th and 7th grade Social Studies curriculum since the Library has up-to-date texts on Georgia topics. Suggested Replacement Materials for Reference Section Due to increased emphasis on nonfiction texts, West Hall Middle Schools library is in need of references that support the grade levels curriculum topics based on social studies particularly people and countries around the world. The majority of the reference materials consist of social sciences, and history. The media specialist uses Follette TitleWave and at times Amazon to make purchases. Follette Titlewave, www.flr.follett.com, offers timesaving labeling services, book reviews, award book highlights, and abundant electronic resources and databases. Suggested materials are outlined below through the Follette.com order form. I focused on the social sciences and history for the materials list order. I also created a Web 2.0 tool to provided additional resources to enhance the scope of the reference section.
