Do Year 8 Girls Spend More Time On Homework Than Year 8 Boys?

The document summarizes a student's research project investigating whether Year 8 girls or boys spend more time doing homework. The student created an online survey asking how much time per day students spend on homework. Results from 52 girls (average 1.6 hours) and 52 boys (average 2.1 hours) were analyzed through tables, graphs, and statistics. Based on the higher average time spent for boys, the conclusion is that boys spend more time than girls on homework.

Do Year 8 girls spend more time on homework than Year 8 boys?

Introduction
Through the last 3 weeks, Year 8 students have been working on a Statistics project. What we had to do was to select a question and collect and analyse data to arrive at a conclusion. So I chose the question Do Year 8 girls spend more time on homework than Year 8 boys?

Hypothesis: I thought that boys would take more time to do homework because in my view most boys are less organised than girls. Organisation relates to my question because if you manage your time better you can finish your homework faster. I can see from my results that my hypothesis was correct

AOI (Organisation): I think my Question connects to the AOI of Organisation because if one is organised ,one can be more efficient and hence complete ones homework faster. Why I chose it? I chose this topic because I wanted to get a question that would be easy to answer and give me many responses (census). I know homework is something that everyone in Year 8 does and that it is why I chose this.

Data Collection Method

To answer our question you could choose an online survey, an experiment or just you going to classes and asking people your question. I chose to do an online survey because I thought it was the most convenient. I thought that I would get a good amount of data because I sent the survey out via Ms. Lee so I was presumed that I would get a good amount of results. My presumption was correct and I got a good amount of results, 52 each, which is 106 out of 120 students in the year. In my survey I put in the question How many hours of Homework do you do every day?

Comments and Explanations

I think that the method I used was the best way to collect my data because while I sent my survey I was able to plan this report I was also able to get a good amount of results and conveniently I got 52 answers from each gender which simplified things a lot. I got a total of 104 results out of around 130 people which is good because that is almost 4 classes. I think I was able to get a good view of my graph because from my first one (average graph) I can see clearly which gender took more time to finish their homework but the histogram gave me a more detailed view of my results because it shows me the amount of answers per section and also a comparison between the boys and girls. From the Mean, Median, Mode and Range calculations, I think the calculation that least helped me was the range because the range was quite obvious and it didnt help me answer my question at all. I think the median helped me, but not a lot because It showed me the middle number and that didnt help me find out much. I think the other 2 helped me answer my research question for the because the Mean (average) showed my the average answer for boys and girls and the Mode (most common answer) showed me the most common answer by the boys and girls. I think that my data is useful because If I were to think if I am spending too much time on homework and see what the average answer for boys is and see if I am around that. I think the limitations were that people do different amount of homework on different days so people might have found it hard to answer my question.

Conclusion
From my data I can see that boys spend more time on their homework than girls. I can also see that the most of the people who answered my survey said they spent 20 minutes to 2 hours. If I were to do this project again then I would have changed the options for the answer to 60mins-119mins instead of 1 hour or 2 hours as answers. I think I would also go and ask people my survey because I could clarify the question and also instead of getting less than the whole year 8 I would be able to get a whole census.
