Collograph Assignments
Collograph Assignments
or wood). The word is derived from the Greek word koll or kolla, meaning glue and graph, meaning the activity of drawing. The plate can be inked with a roller or paintbrush. Ink or pigment is applied to the resulting collage, and the board is used to print onto paper or another material using either a printing press or various hand tools. The resulting print is termed a collagraph. Substances such as carborundum, acrylic texture mediums, sandpapers, bubble wrap, string, cut card, leaves and grasses can all be used in creating the collograph plate. In some instances, leaves can be used as a source of pigment by rubbing them onto the surface of the plate. Different tonal effects and vibrant colours can be achieved with the technique due to the depth of relief and differential inking that results from the collagraph plate's highly textured surface. Collagraphy is a very open printmaking method. Ink may be applied to the upper surfaces of the plate with a brayer for a relief print, or ink may be applied to the entire board and then removed from the upper surfaces but remain in the spaces between objects. For this assignment, we will work with 4 different styles of collographs. You will be asked to create an edition (series) of prints of each of the following. Due dates to be determined. I would say we will work on these for the next two weeks. Abstract Collograph-Could be of anything. Random shapes, lines, and textures.
Landscape Collograph- You can utilize a photograph of a landscape or from a personal sketch; create multiple layers using various materials to help project the idea of a landscape.
Logo-Redesign or Image of choice. Use the collograph process of applying layers to create your stamp
Portrait-This portrait can be of anyone. It can be a self-portrait, an image pulled from the Internet, or from your own sketches. If you are using a personal image or an image from the Internet, we first need to drag this image into iphoto. Once in iphoto, you will edit the picture to Black and White, you will then go to adjust and at the top there are adjustment levels. Adjust the picture to a high contrast black and white. You dont want gray values left in your photo, just black and white.
